388 Biology Masters Degree Programs

The Department of Biology offers three tracks that lead to the MS: a coursework track, a scholarly paper track, and a research thesis track. The coursework track can be completed in one year and the scholarly paper track can be completed in a year and summer. The research thesis track typically requires two years to complete. In all three tracks, students are assigned faculty advisors in their subfield of interest during the first semester in the program. Upon completion of the master’s program, students should be prepared for further graduate training or for eventual employment in teaching and/or research positions in academia, industry, government, or nonprofit agencies. The program accepts post-bachelor’s applicants with degrees in related disciplines where the focus has been on biology or a relevant field. Students with prior graduate work may be able to transfer course credits.

Biodiversity is at the heart of environmental science, addressing some of the most pressing global challenges, from climate change to species conservation. The Integrative Biodiversity programme provides an interdisciplinary approach to understanding and protecting the natural world. Students will develop expertise in biodiversity research, evolutionary processes, and conservation strategies while gaining practical experience in laboratory and fieldwork. The Master of Science in Quantitative and Computational Biology is designed to train experts in biotechnology, computational biology, bioinformatics, and biological data and systems biology analysis, who will have the opportunity to learn in a multidisciplinary context, interacting with students with different experiences. Strong emphasis will be given to quantitative and computational aspects, with a focus on tools to analyze, model, and understand biological systems and phenomena.

The Master's degree program in Biology combines a broad foundation in natural sciences with state-of-the-art knowledge and advanced experimental methodology within biology.

The MSc Biology programme is a collaboration between the Institute of Biology Leiden, Naturalis Biodiversity Center and the Institute of Environmental Sciences, resulting in a broad and diverse scope.

MSc in Biology line offers full 2-year education in biology. The study program for full-time training offers a complete education in biology, with special directions particularly in molecular biology (neurobiology, genetics, microbiology), and animal and plant ecology. Special directions from the second semester offer more laboratory practice in molecular biology or more courses in ecology. The basic subjects are presented in lectures, seminars, and laboratory or fieldwork. The program provides a wider view of the related scientific fields (biophysics, biological chemistry). The students will familiarize their knowledge with the most modern instrumentation in our new research center. It covers all aspects of education, research, and innovation in the fields of biomedical, natural, and environmental sciences. It also provides an opportunity to join the research work in 22 different research groups operating in the building.

The Master of Biology is a postgraduate program designed to deepen the mastery of biological sciences and their diverse applications. The program allows students to specialize in fields that address critical global challenges in health, environmental sustainability, and industrial biotechnology.

The MSCB program seeks to train the world’s best Computational Biologists at the Master’s level. The curriculum provides both breadth and depth of training in Computational Biology and is built on a solid foundation of Biology, Computer Science, Statistics, and Machine Learning (Data Sciences). The first year of the 4-semester-long programme consists of lectures, seminars and practical training in advanced genetics, molecular biology, biotechnology, bioinformatics, immunology, cell biology, microbiology and plant biology.

The faculty of Biology offers graduate study programs for Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. These programs are intended for students who already have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Life Sciences, or a bachelor’s or master’s degree in another scientific field or Engineering, although in the latter case, some additional courses may be required.

The Systems Biology Master’s program is developed in collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine, Life Sciences Center, and the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics. This interdisciplinary Master’s degree program prepares students to perform real-world work in rapidly developing fields including, but not limited to, biological systems modelling, bioengineering, synthetic biology, bioinformatics, neurobiology and data analysis. It is ideal for current and future biologists who wish to take advantage of the most powerful statistical models and programming tools, to produce quantifiable results in their field of choice.

UNC Charlotte’s M.S. in Biology program offers comprehensive training in various biological fields, with options to specialize your studies in a Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology (MCD) or Ecology, Evolution, and Environmental Biology (E3B) concentration. The M.Sc. program offers a Thesis (research) track and requires two years of full-time study. Outstanding students may join the combined M.Sc.-Ph.D. track during the 2nd year of their M.Sc. studies.
