Introduction
In Geography, you'll study both social and physical sciences to analyze and understand major challenges facing the world. You can specialize in human geography or physical geography, or combine elements of both.
You will also have the opportunity to go on field trips and to work with partner organizations to help them solve real-world problems.
Our teaching is based on the research carried out in the department and is focused on three broad themes: creating just communities and places, shaping environmental futures, and geospatial and digital methods.
You will cover specialisms within these themes including:
- Health and well-being
- City futures
- Geopolitics and power
- Tourism and globalisation
- Policing and security
- Hazards and risk
We have our own teaching spaces, laboratory, field equipment, and specialist software like GIS (Geographic Information Systems) to support your learning.
Politics confronts the big issues that affect society. You’ll get an overview of the British political system as well as examine some of the most complex problems faced by humanity and the ideas that underpin them. You can study from optional modules on Russian, Irish, and Middle Eastern politics, nations and nationalism, political theories, and on human rights and humanitarian intervention.
You’ll develop the ability to think critically about outcomes and learn how to locate, analyze, and compare information to support or challenge those outcomes.

Career Opportunities
Studies by the Royal Geographical Society show that Geography degrees are an excellent basis for developing the transferable skills and knowledge that many employers value. You will be skilled in communication, problem solving, analysis and interpretation.
Many of our graduates pursue Geography-related careers in development or environmental consultancies, government, tourism, planning and teaching.
Program delivery
Teaching methods include:
- Lectures in larger groups
- Small group tutorials and seminars
- Workshops
- Fieldwork
- Projects with outside organizations
- Presentations
Most modules at Levels 1 and 2 have three lectures and one tutorial or workshop group meeting each week. You’ll also be able to study additional subjects such as politics, psychology, economics, philosophy, environmental science, or a language.
At Levels 3 and 4 you will have fewer lectures and will learn from tutorials, seminars, local field and laboratory work, and workshops.
For Geography, fieldwork in a variety of environments forms a key element of your degree. We make use of Dundee City itself and other nearby locations and landscapes for local day trips. We also take you further afield into the Scottish Highlands, Spain, or Iceland for week-long residential field trips.
Some Politics modules will include specialized teaching such as trips, a simulation element (European Union politics), or working directly with a human rights advocacy organisation on their campaigning work as part of the curriculum.
