Key Summary
MAEH is a two-year master programme (120 ECTS credits) offered by four European Universities: the University of Algarve (Portugal), the University of Lodz (Poland), the Technische Hochschule Lübeck (Germany), and the University of Antwerp (Belgium). After successful completion of the programme, you will obtain the Joint Master's degree in Applied Ecohydrology. The programme supported by the Erasmus+ fully financially supports 22 scholarships each year, including all expenses with travels, insurance, installation, university fees, and 1000 euros monthly subsistence. The MAEH is scientifically supported by the UNESCO Ecohydrology Programme of the Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme, which has been developing the concept of ecohydrology for more than 20 years.
The strengths of this two-year study programme are:
- Gain in-depth knowledge, skills and competences to restore, engineer and manage aquatic ecosystems and their services to society.
- Innovate by putting ecohydrology principles central when exploring solutions for societal challenges, such as water security and global change.
- Apply nature-based solutions to water problems (regarding both quality and quantity) that are adaptable to local situations in all geographic contexts.
- Develop transdisciplinary skills in water sciences and form a global network by working together with international academic and professional experts.
- Contribute to a better future by managing water resources and ecosystem services in an integrated, transborder and sustainable way.
Our university is located in the city of Antwerp, in the heart of Belgium and Europe. Antwerp is not just an ancient medieval and baroque city rich in history, but also a bustling metropolis with a vibrant social scene, impressive architecture, and striking cultural contrasts. The port of Antwerp is one of the largest and most important in the world, and over 170 nationalities live here - similar to New York! This cosmopolitan vibe is also reflected at the University of Antwerp.
First-rate research and education make the University of Antwerp a wonderful place to study and work. We foster the nexus between research, education, and societal impact. Internationalisation is a key element of our mission statement. It is no coincidence that the University of Antwerp is a partner in one of the most promising European university alliances, Young Universities for the Future of Europe (YUFE), and maintains excellent relationships with hundreds of renowned institutions around the world.
As a home away from home to over 23,000 students, the University of Antwerp is committed to sustainability and operates on a human scale. We believe in co-creation with our students, ensuring their voices are heard in our decision-making processes. Our faculty and staff will welcome you to top-notch facilities on one of our four campuses. While you’re here, immerse yourself in our lively cultural offerings, take advantage of premier sports facilities, and explore a wide array of student services and activities designed to enrich your experience.
The master programme structure provides a progressive and fluid learning to the students, based on a solid and broad background knowledge, merging the course main topics, in order to create a transdisciplinary perspective of problems and solutions, in the water sector.
MAEH offers a large number of optional courses in the first semester aiming at homogenising the knowledge of students with different thematic background. It also provides fundamental principles of hydrology and ecohydrology.
The course MAEH webinar is offered in each semester, but each edition has a different thematic focus with guest speakers from the UNESCO water family and the world of work. It is mandatory that you select this course at least one time in semester 1, 2 or 3 . The applied practical field and laboratory training will take place partly at the University of Algarve and partly at the European Regional Centre for Ecohydrology, in Lodz, Poland, an associated partner to the University of Lodz, at the end of the first semester.
You can do your Master dissertation including internship at any of the partner universities or in collaboration with associated partners of the consortium; depending on your interest for the different research topics. The elective course Integrated Water Management: Case River 21 can only be selected if you will do your Master thesis at the University of Antwerp.
