Studying as an Extra-occupation Student at the Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences

Whether in block weeks, on weekends, or in the evening, more than 500 employed professionals already study at the Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences in extra-occupational degree programs. Usually, short intensive attendance periods and in-depth self-learning phases alternate with each other. The study is specifically tailored to the needs of employed professionals, the study courses can be flexibly arranged so that students can master the double load of studying and working.
In all courses, the interlinking of theory and practice is an important core element. The knowledge gained at the university can be used promptly and leads to successful learning.

With 100 degree programs on the Bachelor, Master, and advanced training levels, including dual study programs, our range of studies is truly comprehensive. Our university has been a pioneer in many areas of academic training – in the establishment of new degree programs, for example – and has thus earned the reputation of being an innovative and progressive institution of higher education.

Now with 14,263 students, our ever-growing university has reached an impressive size. Nonetheless, it has cultivated and maintained the character of a familiar and personal place of teaching and learning. Many degree programs allow students to choose between various areas of concentration and special subjects. Campus Features

The Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences is the largest university of applied sciences in Lower Saxony with more than 13,500 students (as of winter term 2015/16). Still, it offers the atmosphere of a pleasantly intimate, open, and inviting teaching and learning location on the four campuses. This is because the locations have grown together with their environment. This always involves, on the one hand, keeping an eye on the requirements of students and teachers and the other hand, carefully dealing with the regional circumstances.

Westerberg Campus

The Westerberg Campus is the home of the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science. Historically established and modern architecture are also united here. Buildings of the previous von Stein barracks are still central teaching and learning areas of the university. In addition to this, a modern cafeteria with large glass fronts, a lecture hall building with a "floating" area, as well as the new library on the Westerberg Campus have been built since 2012. The library is shared by the University of Applied Sciences and the University of Osnabrück. The entire campus is home to both universities. The cafeteria forecourt is also the site of the annual Terrace Festival at the University. When 15,000 people celebrate three days, it becomes clear that a modern, vibrant campus has been created here.

Caprivi Campus and the Institute of Music

The Caprivi Campus is also located at the site of a former barracks, the Caprivi Barracks. It is a campus which is surrounded by historic buildings. Located in the center, there is a small, but fine canteen and cafeteria; on the west side, the new building of seminar and lecture hall building was officially opened in 2004. This results in a compact campus, which and opens up a wide view of the city. Since 2014, the Caprivi Lounge has been a retreat away from teaching and research, which is intended for conversing, relaxing, or celebrating.

Haste Campus

The Haste Campus, located in Osnabrück's Northern District, is home to the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Landscape Architecture. A look at the campus makes it clear why we speak of the "Green faculty". It is integrated into a beautiful park. With the experimental plots of the university, the greenhouses, the perennial gardens, the Teaching and Research Center for Food Sciences at the traditional-rich "Schmied im Hone" location, a former excursion restaurant, as well as the WABE Center and the trial operation Waldhof, there are many starting points for practice-oriented teaching and research. For decades, this campus has been a place to flourish.

Lingen Campus

That is reflected again in the architecture. The most striking example is the 2012 officially opened Lingen Campus. It was integrated into a fascinating house-in-house concept in Halls I/II of the disused railway repair shop rich in history in the heart of the city. Bright, inspiring spaces are created, which can accommodate more than 2,000 students of the Faculty of Management, Culture, and Technology.

How to submit your application with uni-assist in Berlin

The following apply using the Berlin-based uni-assist service:

Foreign applicants who have obtained their secondary school diploma or their university degree in a foreign country

German applicants who have obtained their secondary school diploma or their university degree in a foreign country (except German international schools)

Applicants who have completed their school or university studies abroad submit their application here. Uni-assist checks whether the academic admission requirements for Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences have been met. However, the decision of whether to admit the prospective student or not is not made by uni-assist, but by Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences. The University Registrar is responsible for the admission and enrollment of international students. Uni-assist does not provide information about studying at Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences or about the admission requirements.

In general: German language certificates can be submitted directly to Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences until August 31, 2024 (to the following address: Hochschule Osnabrück, Studierendensekretariat, Postfach 1940, 49009 Osnabrück, Germany)

Scholarships and Funding

Paying for living, eating, and learning material - the question of financing plays an important role for many people in deciding on a course of study. A semester fee applies to all students at the Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences. Your public transportation ticket is funded by this which you can use on buses and trains across Lower Saxony. The reasonable prices in the cafeterias are also possible with this.

We have gathered tips on study financing under the following bullet points: from BAföG grants and study loans to scholarships up to current part-time jobs.

BAFöG (Federal Law on Support in Education)

The Berufsausbildungsförderungsgesetz (BAföG) (Federal Law on Support in Education) helps you to complete a course of study regardless of the financial situation of your family. You get half of the BAföG payments as a grant, and the other half as a non-interest-bearing loan that you repay over up to 20 years.

Education loan

Regardless of the BAföG, students in an advanced stage of their education can also apply for an education loan from the Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) in the amount of a monthly maximum of €300 for up to 24 months. This is a low-interest loan for the general financing of the degree program or for the financing of special study materials, a study abroad, or an internship.

Student loan

Through the KfW Förderbank, students in undergraduate studies can receive between €100 and €650 per month to finance their living costs from the KfW Förderbank. Generally up to ten semesters are financed. All students get the same interest rate, regardless of major or location, grades, income, or the parent's income. Collateral is not required.

In addition to full-time degree programs, additional, complementary, postgraduate, and second-degree programs and doctoral programs are eligible for funding.

The Student Services Osnabrück maintains numerous residential facilities for students. From single rooms in shared flats to family apartments, it offers approximately 2,000 students in Osnabrück and Lingen housing opportunities at favourable rental prices.

The Student Services Osnabrück mainly offers rooms and apartments in its dormitories but also generally advises on the housing market and Osnabrück, and Lingen and manages several apartments on the market.

Other housing exchanges

On Wednesdays and Saturdays, apartments are advertised in the Neuen Osnabrücker Zeitung (NOZ) and the Lingener Tagespost. Students can place free ads on various other portals - no matter whether they are looking for a shared apartment or need a new tenant.

More tips on finding accommodations

Start the search for accommodation as early as possible - right before the winter semester, the demand for shared rooms in apartments and dormitory rooms is very high

Try to rent the dorm room during the holidays and not at the beginning of the semester

Many students rent out their rooms for a semester when they go abroad. So how about an interim room for a start? This means you can keep looking during the semester when the housing market has calmed down.

Don't just look in the city centre, but also in the surrounding suburbs and regions. You can get around Osnabrück by bus or bike quickly. The university locations are also very easily reached.

How about establishing a shared apartment? Especially for the winter semester, it may be easier to rent a bigger apartment. Go ahead and contact landlords and housing associations together with other students.
