Introduction
Combining your philosophy and film studies gives you a wide range of modules to choose from.
Philosophy explores our existence using critical thinking and argument. We specialize in continental (European) philosophy and teach key texts from the European tradition.
We help you look at how philosophy is important to real-world concerns and contemporary issues by:
- Exploring films and artwork
- Discussing important scientific and technological developments
- Debating controversial ethical issues
- Looking at how texts written 300 years ago can be relevant to political situations today
At Levels 1 and 2 you'll receive a grounding in ancient and modern philosophy and be introduced to fundamental ideas concerning ethics, epistemology (the nature of knowledge), and metaphysics (the nature of reality).
You then specialize at Levels 3 and 4 by drawing on a range of philosophy modules taught by lecturers engaging in interdisciplinary research.
For the film modules, we start with a study of film from its origins, exploring key film techniques and genres, before moving on to study classic Hollywood films, international cinemas, and Film Noir. We then expand on this foundational knowledge to look at topics including:
- Art cinema
- Film theory
- The intersections between film and theatre, and film and literature

Career Opportunities
Philosophy and film studies are adaptable subjects that open up a flexible range of career options.
A wide-ranging knowledge of the arts, film, philosophical thinking, and culture will allow you to approach problems with a broad frame of reference.
A philosophy and film degree provides you with skills that are an advantage in any professional career. You will be able to identify and explain the underlying issues in all kinds of debates.
You will also learn to identify arguments from varied sources and traditions. This will allow you to offer clear responses to these arguments. You can summarise points of view that are not your own and will learn the self-discipline required for independent research.

Program delivery
In both subjects we use a wide range of teaching methods, from lectures, to small group seminars or tutorials, and film screenings.
For most modules at Levels 1 and 2 you will attend two lectures and one tutorial in each week. This may vary at Levels 3 and 4 where you may have one lecture and more small working groups or seminars per week.
For the philosophy lectures you will be introduced to the major themes and topics of a philosopher or philosophical problem. For the tutorials you will question and develop your own world views, construct arguments to defend them, and put together projects in small groups to illustrate them.
Throughout the course you will be given the opportunity to view the films you are studying through weekly dedicated film screenings.
