Introduction
In Geography you study both social and physical sciences to analyze and understand major challenges facing the world. You will develop creative skills in problem-solving, presentation, and communication.
You can specialize in human geography or physical geography, or combine elements of both. In addition, you can study other social science or humanities subjects.
You will also have the opportunity to go on field trips and to work with partner organizations to help them solve problems that they are currently facing.
Our teaching is based on the research carried out in the department and is focused on three broad themes: creating just communities and places, shaping environmental futures, and geospatial and digital methods.
You will cover specialisms within these themes including:
- Health and well being
- City futures
- Geopolitics and power
- Tourism and globalisation
- Policing and security
- Hazards and risk
The student-led Geography and Environmental Society also has a program of activities to help you become part of our community.
Economists examine how societies attempt to make the best use of their scarce resources so that they can advise governments, individuals, and companies on how to improve decisions and outcomes.
Traditionally economists advise on investment, inflation, interest rates, and production. Increasingly, however, economics takes a wider focus with many economists examining climate change, inequality, and improving healthcare.

Career Opportunities
Studies by the Royal Geographical Society show that Geography degrees are an excellent basis for developing the transferable skills and knowledge that many employers value. You will be skilled in communication, problem solving, analysis and interpretation.
Equally a Geography degree provides distinctive attributes that can be drawn on more directly in many career pathways, such as skills in spatial analysis, experience working across scales, and integrating across physical and social sciences.
Many of our graduates pursue Geography-related careers in development or environmental consultancies, government, tourism, planning and teaching.
Program delivery
For Geography we teach using
- Lectures in larger groups
- Small group tutorials and seminars
- Workshops
- Fieldwork
- Presentations
Most modules in Levels 1 and 2 have three lectures and one tutorial or workshop group meeting each week. At Levels 3 and 4 you will have fewer lectures and will learn from tutorials, seminars, local field and laboratory work, and workshops..
You will have the opportunity to attend seminars arranged by staff in relation to their own research projects, and to attend talks arranged by the local branch of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society.
In Economics, at Levels 1 and 2, teaching is initially through a combination of lectures and tutorials. These continue in Levels 3 and 4, supplemented by workshops and statistics sessions.
You will learn to study independently to broaden and deepen your understanding of the issues covered in the teaching.
There are industry guest lectures that you are encouraged to attend.
