Introduction
On this course, you can study the history of English literature from the medieval period right up to the present day, and combine this with studies in creative writing.
A range of modules gives you the option to study anything from Shakespeare to science fiction, Romantic to contemporary poetry, or Victorian novels to Hollywood films.
Our creative writing modules help you explore and extend your own potential as a writer and engage you in a range of literary activities. Our students write novels, stories, poetry, and monologues, as well as explore creativity in non-fiction, essays, journalism, reviewing, and writing for the theatre.
For English literature we start by covering topics such as how to analyze a poem and how to read a novel as a literary critic, introducing you to key skills in critical-creative ways of reading and writing.
We then move on to historical surveys of literature, before exploring in more detail many of the periods, movements, and topics previously covered.

Program delivery
We use a wide range of methods, including lectures and workshops, small group seminars and tutorials, field trips, and film screenings.
Most modules at Levels 1 and 2 have two lectures and one tutorial each week. Our Level 1 creative writing module has one lecture and one writer's workshop each week.
This may vary at Levels 3 and 4, where you typically have one lecture and more small working groups or seminars per week.
Additionally, in our creative writing modules, you will be taught various forms of writer's workshops, craft-based close reading tutorials ('Wordcraft'), and performance ('LiveWire')sessions.
The modules we offer reflect the research specialties of our staff, allowing you to tailor your studies to your own interests.
