Introduction
In the new era of digital revolution and sustainable finance in the global economy the role of corporate law has radically changed both in terms of the purpose of the corporation and duties of corporate officers. Comparative corporate law expertise in context is increasingly in demand in legal practice and across established and new industrial sectors, finance, multinational corporations, SMEs, and start-ups.
In this course, you will learn about business transactions and corporate law at national and international levels and will explore pressing contemporary problems in this context. Our teaching approach is international in scope and comparative by nature. You will develop the skills and knowledge required to pursue a global career as a highly-skilled corporate professional in the new stakeholder economy.
This course combines insights and readings from both Law and business and offers the chance to discuss case studies to develop experience from real-life legal practice. You will be taught by internationally recognized experts with experience in advising international businesses, legal practice, and local governments.
In addition to corporate-related modules (e.g., Comparative Corporate Law and Insolvency, Corporate Governance), you will have a wide choice of elective modules offering you access to expertise in relevant and growing fields including:
- International Investment Law
- Legal Framework for International Project Finance
- Private International Law of Business Transactions
- Competition Law
- International Taxation Law
- Intellectual Property Law
Students on the LLM Corporate and Commercial Law may also take modules from the wide range of specialist courses at the University of Dundee’s Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law & Policy (CEPMLP) and School of Business, offering opportunities for an interdisciplinary learning experience and expand and develop a coherent body of knowledge and expertise in the wider field of corporate law and business in context.

Career Opportunities
This LLM degree offers the knowledge and skills for graduates who are keen to enter the competitive world of commercial and corporate law practice.
You could work in a law firm specialising in commercial and corporate work, or join the legal team of a global corporation.
If you don't want to pursue a legal career, you can work in corporate and commercial sectors. You will graduate with all the necessary legal knowledge and problem-solving skills that are required to practise in the wider corporate and commercial business sector including accounting.
You can also pursue a PhD in commercial and corporate law.
Program delivery
We offer an induction program in legal research skills at the start of each semester. This ensures that you understand the UK and European legal systems, and can find and use the resources that you will need. You will also learn what is required of you in a study environment where you may be learning more independently than previously.
Most of your teaching will be in student-led seminars where you will read extensively in advance, and discussion will be facilitated by the lecturer. Sometimes there will be a lecture component, e.g. at the start of the class to structure the discussion.
All our modules are delivered by experts in their field. Guest lecturers may also visit, either within modules or as a separate event. We offer a wide variety of external activities including a residential study trip for all students.
You will devise, research, and write a dissertation in the summer, which will consider a question relevant to corporate and commercial law. This will let you demonstrate your research skills, and there will be classes to help you prepare for this.
