Master in Music
The Masters' degree in Music given by the Department of Communication and Art of the University of Aveiro offers four branches in Music Research - Performance (Vocal and opera; orchestra instruments: violin, viola, cello, doublebass, flute, oboe, clarinet, fagot, saxofone, french horn, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, tuba, percussion; piano; organ; acordeon; guitar; mandolin; ancient and traditional cordophones: cavaquinho/ukulele, portuguese guitar); jazz vocals; jazz's instruments: piano, guitar, vibrafone, drums, doublebass, saxofone, trumpet, trombone; Composition, Musicology and Conducting (Choral. Orchestral and Wind Orchestra). Specifically in the domains of specialisation in Conducting, Composition and Performance, these post-graduate programs offer a unique opportunity to maestros, composers and interpreters to reflect on their artistic work and to produce new knowledge.
The objectives of the 2nd cycle program in music are: 1) to offer an opportunity to continue 1st cycle studies in music; 2) to contribute to the specialised training of music professionals, with a solid and sufficiently mature practical application, an aspect that is inherent to all practical musical training; 3) to consolidate an appreciation of music as a scientific area at the heart of the Portuguese academy, conferring a scientific profile to the research work carried out in the master's programs; 4) to continue to provide, in accordance with the principles of Bologna, a place for high quality dialogue between the Portuguese academy and the European academies that offer study programs in Music, in the area of performance or studies in performance and composition, and in the field of the Musical Sciences.

The Master's degree in Music responds to the increasing needs at national and European levels for qualified professionals, either working as independent musicians or working for others (as players or maestros in orchestras, small and large ensembles, recording studios, and in a variety of varied cultural projects), or as specialists/researchers (in research centres, as consultants for programs in cultural institutions or theatres and concert halls or publications related to the dissemination of cultural themes, etc.).
