Crime saturates media and popular culture, suggesting both ourenduring fascination with wrongdoing and its consequences, and crime's status asan ongoing social problem.
But, what'sthe story behind these representations of crime? Criminologyexplores the causes, motivations and patterns of criminal conduct. In addition to improving our knowledge and understanding of crime, Criminology also informs policies and practices in policing, law, criminal justice and punishment.
Withour Criminology degree, you'll study crime from a variety of approaches, gain practical and relevant experience, and developa range of transferable skillsthat you can take intoa range of careers and employment sectors.
Sociology
Sociology is the study of societies, cultures, and groups. We live in complex societies, with laws and informal rules that govern how we interact. Sociology helps you understand more about yourself, others andhow society is organised.

Criminology
- Systematic knowledge and understanding of the central disciplinary concepts and issues relating to crime, deviance, justice, punishment and victimisation and how these are constituted in social, political, legal, cultural, economic, technological and spatial contexts.
- Systematic knowledge of theoretical perspectives and debates in criminology and how their development over time has shaped criminology as a multidisciplinary enterprise.
- Systematic understanding of methods used in criminological research, challenges in measuring crime and the social and political frameworks in which knowledge about crime is produced.
Sociology
- Systematic knowledge and understanding of the social, economic and cultural factors influencing individuals in the context of modern society.
- 2 Systematic knowledge of theoretical perspectives and debates, their development over time, application to social life and shaping of the discipline of sociology.
- 3 Systematic knowledge and critical understanding of underpinning methodological principles in social science and the social and political frameworks in which sociological knowledge is produced.
