Women and Gender Studies were founded model of the “three-pronged” stool: teaching, research, and activism. We offer an exciting array of classes, at both the undergraduate and graduate level that interrogates systems of inequality, including gender, sexuality, race, class, ableism, religion, and region of the world. By choosing to pursue work in women and gender studies, students at all levels engage in an interdisciplinary exploration of gender in social, political, cultural, and economic life; gender in history; women and the media; feminist theory; the relationship between sex and gender; the impact of sex, race, class, disability, and sexual orientation on people’s lives; and the ways in which gender stereotypes influence the self in relationship to others. Students in many courses have the opportunity to investigate these issues from a cross-cultural and global perspective.

Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies (WGSS) is a transdisciplinary program for students who wish to explore gender and its relation to other axes of power such as race, class, ethnicity, nationality, religion, and sexuality. WGSS covers a complex variety of theoretical and empirical scholarship both within traditional disciplines and in transdisciplinary frames in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, as well as combinations of the three.

A Women’s Studies minor complements many different majors, such as nursing, physician assistant, social work, education, political science, and psychology. A Women’s Studies minor can help to customize the undergraduate experience, preparing students for various careers involving issues of diversity and social/political difference.

MISSION Creating and sustaining a community of scholar-activists who: understand systems of gender and sexuality; generate and apply intersectional feminist and queer perspectives; challenge structural inequalities; and work for social justice. WGS DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW The study of women has been part of the GVSU curriculum since 1973 when courses were taught in the College of Arts and Sciences and in William James College. The minor in Women's Studies was approved in 1986 and the first Women's Studies minor graduated in 1988. In 1997, the program was significantly expanded to include the study of gender. Women and Gender Studies became a major in 2006. In fall of 2013, a new minor in LGBTQ Studies was launched. With the study of sexuality added to curriculum, the program name was changed to Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (WGS) in 2015. The WGS Department is housed in the Brooks College of Interdisciplinary Studies.

The interdisciplinary Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies Program (GSWS) combines a variety of scholarly traditions to develop a culture of critical thinking about the intersections of gender, sexuality, race, and class. Drawing primarily on the humanities and the social sciences, courses in GSWS explore the social construction of identity and experience as well as how difference, marginalization, and resistance exist within and across cultures and historical periods. In its curriculum and its faculty research, GSWS explores the multiple directions that feminist and queer scholarship and activism take locally, nationally, and transnationally.
