This Veterinary Nursing Assistant program is for those with previous animal handling experience who wish to work in a veterinary-related field or a veterinary clinic. Students will develop skills in the care, management, handling, and nursing of a range of companion animals. This program is the first year of a two-year veterinary nursing program.

This Veterinary Nursing program is open to candidates who have completed the New Zealand Certificate in Animal Technology (Level 5) Veterinary Nursing Assistant strand and wish to become a veterinary nurse. Students in this program will develop advanced skills in the care, management, handling, and nursing of a range of companion animals in a clinical environment.

The VetSkill Level 3 Diploma in Veterinary Nursing (Companion Animal) course is designed for those working in practice to become a Registered Veterinary Nurse with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS). Upon successful completion of the qualification students can complete their enrolment with the RCVS and practice as a Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN).

Otago Polytechnic Veterinary Nursing learners can now pathway through our Level 5 Certificate during year one, the Level 6 Diploma during year two, and then move into this EIT qualification to complete their degree-level Veterinary Nursing study.

This qualification reflects the role of a veterinary nurse who works under the supervision of a registered veterinarian to provide nursing care to animals, support veterinarians to carry out medical and surgical procedures, and support clients in maintaining animals' health.

Important Note: The Associate Degree of Veterinary Nursing will not be taking new enrolments for 2023. All new intakes for 2022 will be into the Bachelor of Veterinary Nursing (a Latrobe University qualification delivered by Melbourne Polytechnic).
