The BVSc program is accredited with theSouth African Veterinary Council (SAVC), theVeterinary Council of Namibia (VCN), theRoyal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS)in the United Kingdom, and theAustralasian Veterinary Boards Council (AVBC)in Australia and New Zealand. BVSc graduates are eligible to register as veterinarians in these and several other countries without passing any further professional examinations. TheSAVCgoverns the ethics and standards of veterinary education and practice in South Africa. All students must register with the Council at first registration in the BVSc program, maintain their registration annually, and adhere to its rules. Registration with the SAVC is a prerequisite for practising as a veterinarian in South Africa.

A master's degree in Veterinary Medicine (MMedVet) is a clinical specialty degree at NQF-level 9 of 360 credits to be completed in 3 years of full-time study as part of a residential training program. The training program consists of clinical work (at least 90 weeks of supervised clinical training), coursework, culminating in a multi-component examination (270 credits) and a research project resulting in a mini-dissertation (of 90 credits) and subsequent publications as required for SAVC registration as a specialist.

The study program meets the requirements of Directive 2005/36 / EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 7 September 2005 on the recognition of professional qualifications (this act has been changed, current consolidated version: 24/04/2020), which apply to regulated profession "veterinarian". The study contains theoretical knowledge and enables the acquisition of the necessary practical skills needed for the performance of the profession, including employment in creative activities, and also prepares students for study in a doctoral study program.

The MMedVet Cattle Herd Health is a full-time postgraduate program run by the University of Pretoria.
