The mission of the Veterinary Assisting program is to prepare students for employment and/or advanced training to enhance their skills and preparedness for a career in the veterinarian and animal caretaker industry.

These credentialed professionals are passionate about animal care and are dedicated healthcare professionals who nurture the health and well-being of animals through education focused on specialized knowledge of animal behavior and care, surgical assisting, laboratory testing and nursing procedures. Veterinary Technicians are qualified to work closely with veterinarians in the areas of surgery, lab procedures and radiography.

This qualification reflects the role of a veterinary nurse who works under the supervision of a registered veterinarian to provide nursing care to animals, support veterinarians to carry out medical and surgical procedures, and support clients in maintaining animals' health.

The Veterinary Technician Program will prepare students for a career caring for animals in vet clinics, animal research, or wildlife rescue. The program will allow hands-on learning to do pharmacology, surgical preparation, and animal care, which will prepare students with the skills needed to find a career in the veterinary technician field.

Vet Tech Institute offers an 18-month program for students seeking the core skills to prepare for entry into the veterinary care field. The curriculum, facilities, on-site kennel, cohort instruction, and experienced faculty are all designed for student success.

Completing this course will prepare the students for full-time employment as veterinary assistants in a veterinary hospital. Students will be expected to meet all of the course goals and demonstrate their understanding of the underlying concepts. The instruction will include lecture, class discussion, hands-on training whenever possible, and assigned reading materials.

The field of Veterinary Technology is a rapidly growing profession that offers qualified individuals many exciting and diverse opportunities. The AVMA-CVTEA accredited Veterinary Technology Program at Norwalk Community College is a two-year, full-time Associate Degree program. Veterinary technology students who graduate successfully from a program that has received AVMA-CVTEA accreditation may take the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE).

The City and Guilds Level 2 Technical Certificate study program provides a detailed introduction to animal care and husbandry, combining practical based training with sound theoretical knowledge.
