As an interdisciplinary program, Environmental & Sustainability Studies will challenge you to combine skills and knowledge from many different fields. You will gain a comprehensive understanding of natural and human environments and their sustainability. You will understand the challenges and see solutions. The ESST program is grounded in theory and oriented toward action. We blend more traditional learning approaches with hands-on learning. In this way, we support our students to become critical and insightful thinkers as well as creative problem solvers.

This course allows the student to explore decision-making in the midst of moral ambiguity and environmental uncertainty. Moral reasoning in an organizational milieu and the understanding of the mechanics of organizational reputation are explored. This course brings into sharper focus the discussion on environmental sustainability that equips students with the strategic concepts they will need to know as they face the future consequences such as climate change and global warming and energy availability.

Cultivating and processing animal feed contributes a disproportionate share of the resource and environmental impacts of livestock production. Social license for the livestock sector will also likely be increasingly predicated on its ability to reduce direct competition for arable land and human-edible feed resources. This four year, funded Ph.D. project will answer this challenge by (1) identifying and mapping the availability of alternative feed resources for the poultry industry in Canada, including (for example), single-cell proteins from forest industry residues, insects meals, and food waste-to-feed products; (2) undertaking detailed environmental life cycle assessment and techno-economic assessments of each feed resource pathway, and (3) assessing their potential for contributing to sustainable poultry production based on a combination of environmental, economic, and nutritional objectives and constraints.

Combine analytical thinking skills relevant to contemporary glass practice with an understanding of material and technical processes to express your own relationship to contemporary art and culture, the international glass movement, and craft ideals as you develop a sustained, innovative studio glass practice. The Glass Minor introduces students to an array of techniques, approaches to material, and idea development strategies. Students may choose to focus on materially oriented approaches such as kiln forming or hot glass, or they may opt to pursue independent trajectories within our classes in support of conceptually driven ends.
