Undergraduate core course. Examines different patterns of political development and contemporary politics in Europe, Latin America, Africa, and Asia. Introduces the comparative method in political science and competing theories of political development and political change.

Why do countries go to war? How do social identities - including race, ethnicity, and gender - shape individuals' political behavior? How can we explain variation in rates of poverty and inequality? We will use the tools of political science to investigate some of these basic questions of governance and politics.

This Summer Course in Water Politics and Governance builds knowledge on the governance of freshwater resources with emphasis on the institutional, political and organizational dimensions. Water is central for ecosystems, human well-being and development.

This course examines ethical and political questions that arise in doing public service work, whether volunteering, service learning, humanitarian endeavors overseas, or public service professions such as medicine and teaching. What motives do people have to engage in public service work? Are self-interested motives troublesome? What is the connection between service work and justice? Should the government or schools require citizens or students to perform service work? Is mandatory service an oxymoron?

This seminar is devoted to an examination of United Nations peacekeeping, from its inception in 1956 in the wake of the Suez Crisis to its increasingly important role as an enforcer of political stability in sub-Saharan Africa. We will look at the practice of "classic" peacekeeping as it developed during the Cold War, with the striking exception of the Congo Crisis of 1960; the rise and fall of so-called "second-generation peacekeeping," more accurately labeled "peace enforcement," in the early 1990s in Bosnia and Somalia; and the re-emergence in recent years of a muscular form of peacekeeping in sub-Saharan Africa, most notably in Congo in 2013. Students will learn the basic history of the United Nations since 1945 and the fundamentals of the United Nations Charter, especially with respect to the use of force and the sovereignty of member states.

While the world has been moving increasingly towards greater inter-connectivity through trade, infrastructure, communications, and migration, criticism of ‘globalisation’ has been growing ever louder. This wide-ranging course explores the process of globalisation, its macroeconomic implications, and the role of international organisations such as the United Nations. You will examine some of the responses to globalisation, from populist political movements like Brexit and Trumpism to diverse transnational social movements such as Black Lives Matter and the Arab Spring of 2011. In so doing, the programme will engage with ethical and theoretical constructs to help us to understand better the thinking behind the differing dynamics we are examining. This course is perfect for students seeking to understand some of the most significant political phenomena of our time.

This Summer Course in Conflicts in the Modern World: Legal and Other Approaches to Resolution in an Era of Hybrid Warfare and Disinformation examines the evolving nature of global conflicts in a world increasingly shaped by hybrid warfare, disinformation, and propaganda. This course provides an interdisciplinary framework for understanding the complexities of modern disputes and explores innovative legal and alternative methods for their resolution.
