A critical introduction to Shakespeare through intensive analyses of six or seven plays. Possible attention to such topics as literary sources, early modern stagecraft, performance history, and contemporary film adaptation.

Intensive exposure to some of the basic writing formats in the communications profession: news releases, letters, features, and profiles. Lead writing, editing, and techniques of interviewing. Extensive writing and rewriting. Develops basic writing skills for different audiences.

The English 9CE course is designed to immerse students in the realm of creative writing through a blend of activities including readings, written exercises, collaboration, conversation, and playful exploration. By engaging with these elements, students will sharpen their awareness of the world around them, learning to respond creatively to the things that pique their interest and stir their emotions. Embracing the ethos of risk-taking and embracing failure as part of the process, students will discover the value of revision as an opportunity for growth.

Historical and contemporary as a broad genre including travel and nature writing, memoir, biography, journalism, and personal essay. Students use creative means to express factual content.

The elements of fiction writing: narration, description, and dialogue. Students write complete stories and participate in story workshops. May be repeated for credit. Prerequisite: PWR 1 (waived in the summer quarter). Note: First priority to Undergraduates. Students must attend the first class meeting to retain their roster spot.

The summer course aims to develop essential Italian language skills—listening, speaking, reading comprehension, and grammar—while introducing students to the creative disciplines represented at IED Florence. The program is designed for students motivated to explore the creative culture of Made in Italy.

Strategies and conventions for Graduate writing. Emphasis is on fluency, organization, documentation, and appropriateness for writing tasks required in coursework and in producing research papers. Fulfills the requirement for EFSLANG 698A.

The 2026 edition of the Summer School will focus on playwriting and the rewriting and adaptation of literary texts for theater and stage performance.

PhD Summer School focuses on development of key competences required for achieving best results in successful defense of the doctoral dissertation and identifying further research directions. Therefore topics of our PhD Summer Schools include: management of scientific research data, writing of scientific articles, analysis of the subtleties of project management, research integrity and ethics, intellectual property and patent system, communication skills development, etc.

The one-week intensive Summer School explores strategies and methods for effective museum communication, with a focus on the content, design, and technology of labels and educational panels. The Summer School will be activated with at least 7 students. The maximum number of participants is set to 20 students.

Through its courses and tutorials, the Writing Program helps undergraduates acquire writing and communication skills and more general habits of mind essential both to their full participation in the intellectual life of the University and to their future personal, professional, and civic lives.

The Easter School “Writing the Essay Beyond Borders” is part of the activities of the Erasmus+ Project Essays Beyond Borders, in which Università di Pisa is a partner along with the universities of Malta, Ghent, and Groningen, as well as the Slovenian Writers’ Association.
