9 History Summer Course Programs

The International Summer School in Athens: Ancient Polis / Modern Metropolis gains an integrated understanding of Athens as a dynamic palimpsest of history, heritage, and urban life. Participants select a topic for an individual or team research project, developed in consultation with instructors.

Central Europe is home to diverse cultural and linguistic communities. The Carpatho-Rusyns are one of these, with a rich cultural tradition and a distinct language spoken across several countries in the Carpathian region. The University of Prešov in the city of Prešov, Slovakia, announces its 14th annual three-week Studium Carpatho-Ruthenorum International Summer School for Rusyn Language and Culture to be held from June 7 – 27, 2026.

The heroic and divine in the literature, mythology, and culture of archaic Greece. Interdisciplinary approach to the study of individuals and society. Illustrated lectures. Readings in translation of Homer, Hesiod, Herodotus, and the poets of lyric and tragedy.

We will examine how exploration, conquest, trade, and migration connected distant societies and how those encounters inspired new ways of seeing and mapping the world.

This course employs medieval and early modern authors, as well as contemporary scholars, as vehicles for understanding the dynamics of power, gender, violence, and politics in George Martin's novel, Game of Thrones.

Our Summer Program offers students the opportunity to enroll in specialized courses as related to their fields of study. Student learning takes place in unique and exciting settings and is guided by professional instruction, in English, from experts from various disciplines related to tourism, architecture, business, communications and journalism, fashion design, gastronomy, music, photography, among others.

The Summer Session of the ASCSA is an intensive introduction to Greece from antiquity through the modern period. The program has provided the most extensive exposure to Greece, ancient and modern, for generations of students of Classics and related fields. It has a strong academic component with participants researching and presenting topics on-site and offers unique opportunities to interact with eminent archaeologists in the field.

Economic History: The Great Divergence, Convergence, and Beyond explores the causes of substantial variations in wealth among nations, investigates the reasons behind the prosperity of certain societies contrasted with others grappling with poverty, and examines the potential permanence of inequality between the developed and developing worlds. To address these questions and comprehend today's global economy, the course emphasizes the significance of adopting a historical perspective.

What inspired the emergence and flowering of the fantasy genre in the 20th and 21st centuries? Oxford and the Rise of Fantasy offers a unique opportunity to examine the fantasy genre from its earliest origins to the present day, exploring at each stage the influence of Oxford and its writers.
