13 Biological and Life Sciences Summer Course Programs

The Summer School in Osteoarchaeology and Paleopathology is an academic program aimed at training students in anthropological and paleopathological laboratory methods. It is an outstanding opportunity for students to gain experience in bioarchaeological investigation by working side-by-side with leading researchers in the field.

Our summer school is a practical, full-immersion course covering biotechniques that can be applied to the study of several biological subjects related to cell biology, gene expression and ultrastructural observations.

This Summer School is a full-immersion course that guides students in learning the technical and theoretical procedures applied to the study of biological structures (tissues, cells, organelles). At the end of the course, students will have acquired knowledge of the state of the art in the main morphological approaches that can be used in basic and applied research.

Statistical methods for biological and medical applications. Collecting data (random sampling, randomized experiments); describing data (numerical and graphical summaries); probability models; statistical inference (hypothesis tests and confidence intervals).

This summer school is a full-immersion workshop on cell culture techniques for both adherent and suspension cell lines with particular emphasis on cell viability assays. In the workshop, schematic theoretical lectures will be given to introduce the assay protocols and to plan the experimental part that will be hosted in cell biology laboratories.

The Gallicano Field School in Medieval Archaeology and Bioarchaeology offers students a unique opportunity to engage in archaeological and bioarchaeological fieldwork. The program is centred around excavations at the Pieve di San Cassiano site in Gallicano, a municipality located approximately 20 miles north of Lucca, Tuscany, Italy.

Our Winter School is a practical, full-immersion course covering ultrastructural techniques that can be applied to the study of several biological subjects (cells, tissues, organisms).

This course will begin by teaching skills like data interpretation and critical evaluation of logical arguments. With that foundation in place, we will then use specific, real-world events such as the FDA approval of GMO salmon, the development of the COVID-19 vaccines, and the fight against MRSA to explore the concepts in biology that underlie them.

The theoretical lectures will introduce participants to the main fundamentals of flow cytometry, covering key concepts such as data acquisition, morphological data analysis, and multicolor flow cytometry. Specific topics will include doublet discrimination, fluorescence compensation, cell viability, proliferation, and morphological data.

This course seeks to save the world through the introduction of biosafety history, concepts, and principles & practices as seen through the lens of specific diseases and research at Stanford. The course will be of interest to students looking to pursue careers in biomedical research or those wishing to pursue professional medical education.

The art of emulating life: design across biological scales! This course involves an active search and a responsive foresight; it does not involve extracting from nature, it implies learning from it. Human beings are not simply observers of nature, as if we were looking at it from a bubble. We are 100% in nature.

This unit will enable students to develop essential knowledge and understanding of the key concepts of biology, gain an appreciation of topical issues, and develop an awareness of scientific methods.

A two-week residential, non-credit pre-college summer program for high school students featuring hands-on courses across arts, science, engineering, business and athletics; programs run weekdays 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and conclude with presentations.
