Study in Malta: Student Visas & Permits

Malta is part of the EU’s border control-free Schengen Area. This means that the visa requirements for Malta are no more stringent than those of Germany or Italy. If you’re a citizen of the EU, the EEA or Switzerland, then you can freely move to Malta and stay for as long as you like once you've registered. If you’re from outside of the EU, this now includes UK nationals, then you’ll need a visa.

Please be aware that you must enter Schengen through the country that issued the visa. For example; you can’t enter through Warsaw on a visa issued by Iceland. Fortunately, you can easily transit through the UK or Ireland if you’re coming from further afield.

If you’re from outside of the EU, this is what you’ll generally need to do to get a study visa for Malta:

  • A completed visa application form - you can find this on the website of your nearest Maltese embassy or consulate
  • Your passport and two passport-sized photos
  • Letter of acceptance from your school - it must show that your course will last longer than three months
  • Proof of finances - you must be able to show that you have at least €18 a day to live off for the duration of your course
  • Proof of a place to live on Malta
  • Health insurance with minimum coverage of €30,000 across the entirety of the EU
  • Proof that you’ll leave Malta after your course - this can be an airline or ferry ticket

All documents must be presented in English or with a notarized translation. It takes about four weeks to process an application. Your visa will be valid for the duration of your course. You can also extend your stay in Malta for up to a year after graduating to continue studying.

Your student visa allows you to work up to fifteen hours per week during term time and up to forty hours per week during holidays. You’ll be taxed like a Maltese citizen.

You don’t need a visa to enter Malta for up to ninety days. This means that you can take a short course or summer course to improve your English without needing a visa.
