Study in Luxembourg: Student Visas & Permits

Luxembourg is part of the EU’s Schengen Area. This means that visa requirements across all twenty-six participating countries are broadly similar. If you’re from the EU, the EEA or Switzerland, then you enjoy freedom of movement and can move to Luxembourg without too much hassle. That being said, Luxembourgish visa requirements are no more stringent than those of France or Spain.

Just remember that you must enter into the Schengen Area via the country which issued your visa. For example; you can’t enter the Area through Barcelona on a visa issued by Lithuania. Fortunately, there are plenty of connecting flights into Luxembourg from countries outside of the Area, like Ireland and the UK. Once inside the Area, however, you’re free to travel as widely and as far as you like. Schengen visas are also valid in Croatia, Romania, Bulgaria and Cyprus, but not in Ireland.

Student visa requirements vary from country to country, so do check before applying. But to get a student visa for Luxembourg, this is generally what you’ll need:

  • Apply for temporary residency through the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs
  • Passport photos
  • Passport
  • Birth certificate
  • Confirmation of admission
  • Health insurance covering the entirety of your stay
  • Proof of sufficient finances
  • Clean police check from your home country
  • Proof of somewhere to live

Once you’ve arrived, you’ll need to register with the commune where you move to and undergo a medical check before being issued your full student permit. This generally takes about a month.

Your student visa allows you to work during your time in Luxembourg. You can work for up to fifteen hours per week during term time and up to forty hours per week (full-time) during the holidays. Your income will be taxed like that of a Luxembourger.
