Study Visas for International Students in Iceland

Study visas in Iceland are generally a hassle-free affair. Students outside the EU/EEA will need to apply for a residence permit before arriving in Iceland which can be done by contacting the Directorate of Immigration in Iceland or by notifying the nearest Icelandic embassy.

On the other hand, EU/EEA students who wish to study in Iceland will not need a visa. However, if they are planning to stay for longer than three months, they are required to list their legal residence at Registers Iceland (which is the civic registry of Iceland) once they arrive in the country.

All students, regardless of country of origin, must apply for a Kennitala – an Icelandic ID/social security number - which is used for every day matters, such as opening a bank account.

Required Documents for Study Visas in Iceland (EU/EEA Citizens)

  • Passport
  • Application form
  • Acceptance Letter from your university
  • Medical insurance details – (such as an EHIC - European Health Insurance Card)
  • Proof of Financial Support (i.e Bank statements) amounting to ISK 180, 550/ EUR 1,434 per month

Required Documents for Study Visas in Iceland (Non-EU/EEA Citizens)

  • Student Visa Application Form
  • Proof of registration at the university
  • Medical Insurance details
  • A secure housing certificate
  • Medical certificate (if required)
  • Criminal record certificate
  • Proof of Financial Support (i.e Bank statements) amounting to ISK 180, 550/ EUR 1,434 per month
  • Photocopy of passport
  • One (1) passport-sized photograph
  • Receipt for payment of the residence permit application

The Directorate or the Embassy may still request for additional documents, so it would still be better to inquire just to double check.

Deadlines for Student Visa Applications

Applications for student visa must be submitted to the Directorate before certain deadlines to ensure that a permit will be granted before the semester starts. For the Autumn semester, all documents must be handed in no later than the 1st of July, while the Spring semester’s deadline is no later than 1st of November. Student permits are usually valid for six months or one semester. International students are required to apply for the renewal of their student visa at least 30 days before it expires.

Working While Studying

Student visas in Iceland are flexible enough to allow students to apply for a work permit while they are engaged in their studies. Non-EU students are limited to 20 working hours per week, and must have a student residence permit as well as a contract of employment issued by their employer.
