An undergraduate degree takes between three and five years to complete, depending on the subject. A postgraduate degree normally takes two years. A PhD takes between three and seven years, depending on whether or not you teach as you write your thesis. It’s also important to note that all international students are responsible for paying their own tuition fees, although these fees are very much affordable, ranging from US$2500 to US$6000 per year. Programs taught in English are normally at the higher end of this range. Programs that require the school to have a lot of materials and facilities in place, like medicine, are also towards the higher end.

Georgia has several internationally-recognized and accredited institutions, particularly when it comes to medicine. The highest-ranked and most prestigious school in the country is the Ivane Javakhishvili State University in Tbilisi. It is extremely competitive for Georgian-langauge admission and the same is true of its English-language programs, particularly in medicine and some of its doctoral and post-doctoral research programs.

Alongside the Ivane Javakhishvili State University, the Ilia State University and the Georgian Technical University are both known internationally and are fully accredited. Be warned, however, that degrees from some smaller schools are not always recognized elsewhere. This shouldn’t be too much of a problem for you as an international student as not too many of these universities actually teach any courses in English. But Georgian higher education is continually improving and, in some areas, is now up to the same EU-wide standard as Germany or Italy.

As for your studies, it’s the same as in most countries: a mixture of classes and independent study. How long you spend in the classroom will strongly depend on what you’re actually studying.
