The English Literature in a Visual Culture specialization at VU Amsterdam focuses on the relation between literature and visual culture, unique in the Netherlands and rarely studied so intensely as here. Rooted in the university’s longstanding tradition of studying the relations between word and image, this specialized interdisciplinary program will teach you how to analyze the various ways in which textual and visual culture interact. The topics studied in this Master’s range from the Renaissance stage to the contemporary graphic novel, from the relation between poetry and photography to film adaptations of gothic novels.
English Literature Curriculum
English Literature in a Visual Culture consists of 60 credits and aims to give you new insights into the ways in which literary works and the visual arts continually reinforce one another. After a theoretical core course, you will be exposed to a host of highly diverse yet interrelated courses, for instance on Visual Art and the American Poet, Film Adaptation, Renaissance Literature, and Visual Culture, and The Gothic Gaze. You will complete your Master’s degree by writing a Master’s thesis (18 credits).
- A Bachelor's degree in Literature and Culture or Humanities (with solid background in literature and culture) from an accredited research university including at least three full years of academic study amounting a minimum of 180 ECTS or equivalent.
- Motivation, background and personality (motivation letter, CV and personal reference)
- Proof of sufficient proficiency in English.
