Program description

This course has been designed for graduates (from any degree subject background) who would like to become a nurse. The PgDip Nursing (Mental Health) course at the University of West London offers an exciting, rewarding and challenging career. You will support people with a wide range of mental health conditions such as:

As a student studying mental health nursing you will achieve a PgDip Nursing (Mental Health) and become registered as a Mental Health Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

You will learn how to assess, plan, promote and support a person’s recovery, facilitating their involvement and enhancing their level of control over their condition (this is called a recovery focused approach). Importantly, you will also learn how to care for your client’s physical health needs.

You will learn how to build effective, compassionate relationships with people and their relatives and carers. You will develop an understanding of the legal context of the work of a mental health nurse and be able to identify whether and when someone may be at risk of harming themselves, or someone else.

You will learn to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team, for example with psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, health visitors, social workers, police, relevant charities, local government and housing officers. Your aim will be to deliver high quality mental health care, in partnership with clients and their families and carers (co-production), underpinned by current research findings.

This exciting course will also allow you to develop a broad range of skills including, teaching, leadership and management. Finally, you will reflect the values of the NHS Constitution and the 6 Cs:

The aim of this course is to prepare a registered nurse who is able to offer an excellent quality of compassionate care, enhanced leadership, management and holds inter-professional and research skills, in order to influence practice and initiate change.
