Program description

This course has been designed for graduates (from any degree subject background) who would like to become a nurse. The PgDip Nursing (Learning Disabilities) course at the University of West London offers an exciting, rewarding and challenging career. You will contribute to the health and wellbeing of people with learning disabilities, facilitate quality lives and enable them to live independently as possible. As a student studying learning disabilities nursing you will achieve a PgDip Nursing (Learning Disabilities) and become registered as a Learning Disability Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

You will learn how to assess the often complex social and health care needs of people with learning disabilities and prepare and deliver robust, research based care plans. Needs can be varied and linked to physical disabilities, epilepsy, mental health issues/challenging behaviour, or difficulties with speech, hearing or vision.
You will develop skills as a manager, enabler and co-ordinator of services, enabling people with learning disabilities to maintain / and or enhance their physical and mental health. Importantly, you will learn how to build effective, compassionate relationships and advocate for people with learning disabilities in a variety of health and social care settings. This will mean learning to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team, for example with psychologists, social workers, teachers, GPs, occupational therapists and speech and language therapists. Your aim will be to facilitate access to high quality care, to enable each individual to meet their full potential.

This exciting course will also allow you to develop a broad range of skills including, teaching, leadership and management. Finally, you will reflect the values of the NHS Constitution and the 6 Cs:

The aim of this course is to prepare a registered nurse who is able to offer an excellent quality of compassionate care, enhanced leadership, management and holds inter-professional and research skills, in order to influence practice and initiate change.
