neuro sciencecognitive scienceCognitive Science is the study of the mind and brain, investigating how and why people perceive, think and act the way they do. The knowledge and skills gained in the Master's course will provide a foundation for advanced scientific research, but also prepare for professional applications in the fields of education, consumer and economic decision making, psychology and clinical research.

This Master’s program in Cognitive Science offers a unique opportunity for students aiming to train as scientists. Its main aim is to prepare strong Ph.D. candidates who are well trained, confident and competitive in performing research in international settings.

Two characteristic features of this program are: a close relationship between teaching and research practices, and a constant interplay between biologically-based and technological-based explorations of the human mind and brain.

Students choose between two tracks: Cognitive Neuroscience (CNS) and Language and Multimodal Interaction (LMI). Each track offers a selection of specialized courses, to allow students to tailor their training to their academic interests.

Mandatory courses in Cognitive Science study include:

  • Basic Biology
  • Foundations of Cognitive Psychology
  • Foundations of Cognitive Neuroscience
  • Mathematics and Statistics
  • Research Design
  • Current Issues in Neuroscience: Language and Thought
  • Current Issues in Neuroscience: Animal Models
  • Neuroscience
  • Fundamentals of Brain Imaging
  • Independent Studies

Students have access to the laboratories during the master’s degree program, thus gaining invaluable hands-on experience with the latest research technologies, including fMRI, EEG, MEG, TMS and eye tracking.

During the first year of the Cognitive Science master’s degree course, students focus on understanding methodological and theoretical bases of scientific research. During the second year, students have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with fMRI, EEG, MEG, TMS, eye-tracking and other advanced research tools.

Admission requirements

In order to be considered for admission to the Master's course in Cognitive Science - MCS, the following minimum requirements must be fulfilled:

  • a three- or four-year-Bachelor’s degree from an internationally recognized institution at university level;
  • working knowledge of English;
  • good knowledge of the most common computer applications
