About this program

Master's Program in Dance Pedagogy

The Master's Program in Dance Pedagogy combines critical thinking, artistic-pedagogical practices and exploration of the wide range of meanings in the arts.

In the Master's Program in Dance Pedagogy, art pedagogy is seen as a form of artistic activity where pedagogical questions are ever-present. In the context of art pedagogy, art, performance and teaching are viewed as encounters where aesthetic, ethical and political phenomena are intertwined. Art and pedagogy feed off each other, which gives rise to change in both.

The program consists of advanced studies in the arts, studies in the theory and practices of art pedagogy, research studies, teaching practices, international interaction and elective studies that support the development of the student's identity as an art pedagogue.

The goal of the master's program is to train open-minded art pedagogue professionals who have found their own voice, have cooperation skills and are aware of their responsibility.

The degree requirements for Master's Programs in Dance Pedagogy and Theatre Pedagogy include pedagogical studies for teachers (60 cr). Tampere University is in charge of the study module in pedagogy as a whole.

Admission requirements

Language skill requirements

In order to be admitted as a degree student to the Uniarts Helsinki, applicants must have command of the language of instruction used in the program. Having sufficient language skills is, in principle, a requirement in order to be eligible to apply, and it ensures that the applicant has demonstrated educability and suitability for university-level education and has the communication skills needed as a student.

The academies determine the languages of instruction for each degree program. The languages are stated in the program’s admission criteria as well as the syllabus.

If a program has several languages of instruction, applicants are only required to prove their proficiency in one of the languages. If a degree program or e.g. joint program requires the demand of several languages, applicants may be required to demonstrate their language skills in several languages.

Applicants must demonstrate their skills with a language certificate or prior studies. Language skills may also be assessed as part of entrance examinations.

A number of our study programs is offered in Finnish, Swedish, and English. This means that the student has the right to use any of these languages in teaching and study attainments, unless it is otherwise stated in the curriculum or the character of teaching makes it impossible. Please notice that most of our group instruction is held in Finnish or English.

These requirements are followed in our bachelor’s and Master's admissions, and in doctoral admissions where appropriate.
