About this program
MRes Social Sciences and Humanities
The Master of Research (MRes) in Social Sciences and Humanities is a flexible, interdisciplinary postgraduate program designed to provide you with advanced theoretical, methodological, and practical research training and prepare you for continuing into a PhD or for future career as researcher in a workplace. The program covers introductory and advanced topics in research methodology and designs, both qualitative and quantitative, and a good grounding in non-primary research design such as systematic review methodology and secondary data research. You will also conduct an independent piece of research as part of a 3000 words dissertation, where you will put into practice the methods and theoretical concepts you have been taught.
While an MRes is a research-oriented degree aimed at training independent researchers, it is important to offer you a more discipline-specific experience. For that this program offers you two options for obtaining a full degree.
As a first option, you have the choice to select a discipline-specific pathway mapped onto one of our existing taught postgraduate programs (MA or MSc) within the School of Social Sciences and Humanities. For that you will need to enrol in a module from and existing MA/MSc course and complete a Dissertation research project on a cognate topic.
As a second choice, if you do not want to enrol on a specific pathway mapped on an existing MA/MSc, and rather prefer to focus on your own area of specialism, you could alternatively enrol in a 20 credits Independent Learning Project module, in lieu of the module from an existing Master program. In this module you can, supported by your academic adviser, pursue a topic in an area of specialism of your choice, within the disciplines of the School of Social Sciences and Humanities.
