Psychology
Students enrolled in the Doctor of Philosophy in Clinical and Counseling Psychology have the opportunity to earn a Master's of Science in Psychology as they progress towards completion of the doctoral degree.
The Combined Clinical & Counseling Psychology (CCP) Doctoral Program is an innovative doctoral psychology program that offers training in the areas of Clinical and Counseling Psychology leading to the Doctor of Philosophy degree. The CCP program is jointly administered by the Department of Psychology in the College of Arts & Sciences as well as the Department of Counseling & Instructional Sciences in the College of Education and Professional Studies at the University of South Alabama. USA is located in Mobile, AL in the central gulf coast region. Mobile is a diverse metropolitan area of approximately 400,000 people. USA is a university of 15,000 students, host to Alabama's second medical school and has been the fastest growing university in the state of Alabama for the past decade.
Admission requirements
In addition to meeting graduate school requirements for regular admission, applicants to the Combined-Integrated Clinical and Counseling Psychology graduate program must meet the following criteria:
- Graduate Record Exam: Summed score of 305 or better on the verbal and quantitative subtests and a score of 4.0 or better on the writing subtest of the General Test of the Graduate Record Examination will be preferred.
- Applicants must have completed at least 21 semester hours of prior psychology courses (usually at the undergraduate level) including a statistics course, and a course in research design and methods. The GRE subject test in psychology is optional and is not necessary for an application to be reviewed.
- In addition, the program's model of admission heavily values the degree of match between the student's clinical and research interests and that of their faculty mentor. You are assigned a mentor at the time you are offered admission, and usually this individual is your primary advisor, mentor as well as your thesis and dissertation chair during your program of study. Thus, your ability to articulate in your admissions materials your clinical and research interests, and to identify the faculty member or members with whom these best fit.
- Lastly, the program is a unique integration of clinical psychology and counseling psychology. Applicants are advised to articulate in their admission essay why such a program philosophy is a good fit with their own philosophy, interests and goals.
