Biodiversity, Conservation, and Environmental Quality

The master's degree in Biodiversity, Conservation, and Environmental Quality (BCEQ), entirely taught in English, prepares the highly qualified figure of environmental biologist expert in the multiple aspects of biodiversity, aimed at nature conservation and the assessment of environmental quality.

The BCEQ graduate therefore deals with the analysis and protection of biodiversity, environmental monitoring, research, scientific dissemination, and education, thus meeting the national and international demand for experts in biodiversity.

Graduates in BCEQ can continue their studies by accessing a PhD program and can take the state exam for Biologists.

Graduates in BCEQ find their natural place within bodies for the environment and biodiversity, institutions and laboratories for analysis and research, local authorities, cooperatives, consortia for the management of museums, parks, protected areas, and nature reserves, and as freelance biologists.

Admission requirements

Bachelor/Undergraduate diploma (or higher)

Candidates are required to hold a three-year degree (B.A.)

Admission criteria

Students who wish to enrol in the first year of the second cycle degree in Biology must have, in addition to the curricular requirements stated in the academic regulations of the course, an adequate preparation both in matters fundamental to the preparation of the Biologist, such as Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Computer Science, and in basic biological disciplines that provide the essential knowledge about the morphological, functional and structural organization of living beings. They must also know the biochemical, molecular and cellular mechanisms regulating inheritance, reproduction and development. In particular, they must document the previous acquisition of sufficient knowledge in the following scientific disciplines: Botany, Zoology, Ecology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Cytology and Histology, Developmental Biology, Microbiology, General Physiology, Genetics, Pharmacology

Non-EU citizens are invited to contact the Italian Diplomatic Representation of their countries as soon as possible in order to obtain all the required documents for the pre-enrollment at the University of Siena and for information regarding the VISA process.

EU citizens – Non EU citizens with regular permit to stay – Italians with degrees obtained abroad

They must contact the appropriate Italian Diplomatic Representation in order to obtain all the documents required for enrollment in the University of Siena.

Language requirements

In order to take the MSc courses, students must have an adequate knowledge of the English language, at least of level B1 as established by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Students can demonstrate to possess the required knowledge level either through a recognized international certification (see the list) of international certifications recognized by the University of Siena), or by passing a B2 level exam at the Centro Linguistico di Ateneo (CLA).

After enrolment in Siena, students having an international certification must present it to the CLA office. The CLA is located in Piazza San Francesco 7, Siena (more details can be found in the related website).
