Program description

University Master's Degree in Advanced Research in Humanistic Studies

Up to now there has been a lack of a specific master's degree that provides future researchers with the training they need to undertake a research career in the Humanities. In this regard, providing specialist scientific training addresses an important social and employment need among the scientific community at both national and international levels.

The Master's Degrees in Advanced University Research in Humanistic Studies provides you with a solid foundation in the methodologies of general and specific scientific research in the ambit of the Humanities. It gives you the theoretical and practical training you need to embark upon a research career by guiding you towards a doctoral program in the Humanities and it gives you the skills and knowledge you need to become a productive member of research projects and groups.

The course will be taught in Catalan (45%), Spanish (45%) and English (10%).

Admission requirements

The Master's Degree is aimed at individuals who hold official university bachelor's degrees or diplomas in ambits related to either of the master's two specialities. At the URV, these are primarily, but not exclusively, the following:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Hispanic Language and Literature.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Catalan Language and Literature.
  • Bachelor's Degree in History.
  • Bachelor's Degree in History of Art and Archaeology.

Selection criteria

Students will be chosen on the basis of the following criteria, independently of the speciality:

  1. The degree of affinity between the student's prior training and the master's speciality to which they have applied. The strongest candidates will be those who have been trained in ambits directly related to the specialities offered by the Master's Degree (Linguistics and Literary Studies, History and History of Art). In the specific case of the URV, these are primarily: Bachelor's Degree in Hispanic Language and Literature, Bachelor's Degree in Catalan Language and Literature, Bachelor's Degree in History, Bachelor's Degree in History of Art and Archaeology. maximum 4 points.
  2. Evaluation of the academic transcript for the official university qualification that allows access to the Master's Degree: maximum of 3 points.
  3. Complementary training and work experience related to the contents of the Master's Degree (courses, seminars or other training activities, accredited with the appropriate documentation): maximum of 1 point.
  4. Professional and research experience related to the content of the Master's Degree and study visits abroad: maximum of 1 point.
  5. Level of English equivalent to or above B2: maximum of 1 point. In accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, the following scale will be applied: C1= 0.5; C2 = 1.

Program content

The training program is structured around two specialities:

  • Research into History and History of Art.
  • Research into Linguistic and Literary Studies.

The master's degree consists of core subjects that teach the fundamentals of research in the Humanities and other subjects specific to each of the specialities, with a special emphasis on interdisciplinarity, the incorporation of the new technologies into humanistic studies (Digital Humanities) and practical work in advanced research environments.

Scholarships & funding

The URV Master's Grants are aimed at exempting full-time students newly registered on a master's course from registration up to a maximum of 60 ECTS credits. For those master's degrees consisting of 90 and 120 ECTS credits, there is the possibility that students may receive the grant in the second year.

Tuition fees

Students with degrees from other countries will be charged an academic tax of €218.15 the first time they enrol only (price for course 2020-21).
