The course aims at providing a broad overview of the processes involved in academic publishing.Participants will learn how a book is designed and produced, as well as the legal and economic aspects behind its distribution.

Admission requirements

Graduate students and MA/MSc holders of all disciplines, interested in a career in academicpublishing.

BA/BSc in all subjects. Priority will be given to MA/MSc holders.

Program content

The two-week course is digitally hosted by the Museums of the University of Pisa (SMA) and tailored to the needs of graduates of any discipline interested in a career in academic/educational publishing.What are the professions involved in academic publishing? What are the processes behind designing a scientific volume (in terms of contents, page design, budget and royalties, distribution)? How is a scientific volume produced (writing, copy-editing, translation/language editing, design, images and charts, bibliographies, indexes, the creation of digital contents)? How is a scientific book marketed and distributed?The course revolves around these and related questions, by relying on the experience of experienced instructors from a variety of fields: managing editors of both commercial publishing companies and university presses, the editors of scholarly journals, business consultants, copy-editors, translators and language editors, designers, researchers, and the creators of digital contents.

The Foundation Course

A one-year programme taught exclusively in English, which bridges the gap between High School and University studies and it equips students with the appropriate academic grounding for an Italian degree at the University of Pisa.This programme is aimed at International students who have 11 or 10 years of schooling and have successfully completed High School and at American students who have not taken Advanced Placement (AP) courses during the last year of High School nor have attended 2 years of College

Summer Schools

Intensive academic courses for international students and also for graduates.They mostly last from 1 to 6 weeks and take place in an international context, with students and lecturers coming from various parts of the world and all lectures delivered in English.They are characterized by nonconventional teaching formats (workshops, tutorials, excursions, cultural events, business testimonials, etc.) and a multidisciplinary approach. Professors are experts in their areas and have a keen interest in what they do.Summer Schools meet strict academic regulations: each grants at least 3 ECTS credits and the participants who successfully pass the final exams will receive an official academic transcript.
