Postgraduate Certificate in Applied Science (PGCertAppSc) - Advanced Nutrition Practice
The Postgraduate Certificate in Applied Science (PGCertAppSc) allows students to begin postgraduate study with a 60 point qualification from which they can later proceed to a Postgraduate Diploma or Master's degree.
This option allows students to maintain employment while gaining qualifications.
Advanced Nutrition Practice
The study of Advanced Nutrition Practice is for students with a relevant undergraduate degree in human nutrition or sport and exercise nutrition, or a background from a related health field, who wish to develop and advance their nutrition skills and develop skills for a career in the practice of nutrition.
This course covers clinical nutrition, public health, sports and exercise nutrition, food solutions to nutritional issues and the latest evidence in nutrition research. Each aspect of the course has practical components that allows students to learn and develop skills in real-world environments. Students also have the opportunity to take papers from other departments such as sports and exercise science, entrepreneurship, finance, marketing, public health, science communication and food science depending on their areas of interest.
Admission requirements
Admission to the Program shall be subject to the approval of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Science).
Every applicant must either
- be a graduate, or
- have alternative qualifications or experience acceptable to the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Sciences).
In considering an applicant’s qualifications, regard will be had to the detail of the course of study followed to gain the qualification, as well as the applicant's performance in the Program.
If your first language is not English you need to meet our English language requirements as follows: IELTS score of 6.5 in the academic module (with no individual band below 6.0); Internet-based TOEFL: Score of 95 with a minimum writing score of 22, Paper-based TOEFL: score of 587 (TWE 4.5); we also accept a number of other English language tests. Due to COVID-19, we currently accept IELTS Indicator Test, and TOEFL iBT Special home Edition.

Program content
The Program of study
- a. shall consist of approved 400- and 500-level papers, to the value of 60 points, selected from the papers specified in Science Schedule D for the Master of Applied Science subject concerned.
- b. shall normally include papers from more than one subject and at least one of the approved 400-level papers that shall be amongst the first papers taken in the Program of study.
- c. may, with the approval of the Head of Department or Course Director concerned, include papers worth up to 20 points from 400-and 500-level papers other than those specified in Science Schedule D.

Application details
Applicants should submit their online application form along with the following supporting documents: scanned copies of their previous official academic transcripts (awards gained, marks, grades); a certified copy of the personal details page of their passport or a birth certificate (in English); Educational Credential Evaluators report (ECE); and certified/notarised translations of original documents which are not in English. After completion of online application, applicant’s proof of identity document must be posted to: International Office, University of Otago, PO Box 56, Dunedin 9054, New Zealand. International student applications for semester 1/summer school study close: Oct-31; Semester 2 study close: Apr-30.
