What can you do with a health major? There are numerous possibilities.
There is no doubt that in today’s society, health is a popular topic. An increased interest in nutrition, exercise, and overall well-being has developed in light of the obesity epidemic, and growing healthcare costs demand individuals who are primed to make a difference.
As a result, health teachers are in an excellent position to guide our nation’s youth in the right direction at an early age. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) indicates that employment of health educators and community health workers is projected to grow 21 percent through 2022, faster than the average for all occupations.
The BLS points to efforts to improve health outcomes and reduce healthcare costs as a key reason for this growth in career opportunities for students with a health degree. Insurance companies, employers, and governments continue to seek ways to improve quality of care and health outcomes while curbing costs. Health educators and community health workers play a critical role in this process, teaching people how to live healthy lives in the hopes of avoiding costly diseases and medical procedures.
Mount Union’s health major is primarily focused on those who would like to receive multi-age licensure to teach health to K-12 students via our CAEP accredited health education program. As a student in this program, you will be prepared to improve school health initiatives in an effort to enhance student awareness and choices.
Students often pair their health studies with an additional major in physical education, as these graduates are often the most marketable. In addition, our health students are thoroughly prepared for a rewarding career in education, as evidenced by the fact that 100% of our recent graduates passed the health praxis exam (the test required for teacher licensure) the first time.
Common careers include:
- Health education
- Physical education
- Health administration
