Program description

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Engineering

The Bachelor of Science in computer engineering degree at the University of Mount Union allows students to integrate electrical engineering and computer science to design, build, and test computing systems. From processors and circuit boards to memory devices and networks, computer engineers are continuously making computing systems faster, smaller, reliable, and more mobile.

Our faculty, comprised of experts in the fields of information security (coding, operating systems, mobile computing, etc.) and computer systems (parallel processing, embedded systems, integrated circuits, etc.), work closely with students to help prepare them for a rewarding career.

The computer engineering major is housed in the School of Engineering along with the two successful ABET accredited programs in mechanical engineering and civil engineering.

Admission requirements

GPA requirement: 2.5 (except for nursing, that requirement is a 3.3)

English proficiency (one of the following):

  • TOEFL: 61 iBT
  • IELTS: 5.5
  • PTE: 55

Upon completion of this program, students will graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree.

Program objectives

  • Technical and Engineering Skills – Graduates will be able to apply mathematical, scientific, and engineering principles in the design, analysis, experimentation and testing of computer devices, components, subsystems, and software using appropriate tools and techniques.
  • Professional and Leadership Skills – Graduates will be able to recognize and achieve high levels of professionalism and attain careers in which they assume leadership position, work in multidisciplinary teams, make decisions that are socially responsible, and communicate effectively.
  • Worldview and Personal Development - Graduates will be aware of ethical, moral, diversity systems in a social context and prepared to continuously demonstrate their ability to learn new concepts, identify new directions, and adapt in response to the needs of a rapidly changing world.
  • At the time of graduation, computer engineering students will have achieved the following Program Outcomes:
  • Principles: An ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics.
  • Design: An ability to apply the engineering design process to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration for public health and safety, and global, cultural, social, environmental, economic, and other factors as appropriate to the discipline.
  • Experimentation: An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions.
  • Communication: An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences.
  • Responsibility: An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts.
  • Learning: An ability to recognize the ongoing need to acquire new knowledge, to choose appropriate learning strategies, and to apply this knowledge.
  • Teamwork: An ability to function effectively as a member or leader of a team that establishes goals, plans tasks, meets deadlines, and creates a collaborative and inclusive environment.
  • Foundations: Knowledge of the foundations of engineering, science, and mathematics and their applications in computer engineering.

Career opportunities

Computer engineering is a field with demand and has the potential to grow as more industries outside of computer and electronic product manufacturing begin to research and develop their own electronic devices. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics, there is estimated to be 77,600 jobs by 2026. The average median salary in 2017 was $115,120, roughly 25% higher than the median engineering salary.
