The BA (Hons) Journalism with International Studies programme is aimed at students wishing to study towards working as a journalist. The course combines a practical, hands-on major in Journalism, aimed at developing first-class production skills in online, print and broadcast media, with a minor in an interdisciplinary field that develops your understanding of international politics and history.
The Bachelor of Arts Honors degree will train you in a broad range of essential and advanced journalistic principles and writing / production techniques. Journalism with International Studies draws on the close current and historic alliance between politics, the communicative media, and the complex role of the press and broadcasting in the mediation of politics to the public.
Students benefit from a small student: tutor ratios (8:1) with a dedicated media lab at their disposal. The work is production-based, allowing students to graduate from the programme with a portfolio to present to potential employers.
BA (Hons) Journalism with International Studies students learn to use industry-standard software including InDesign, Photoshop and Final Cut Pro as well as DV cameras and digital still cameras. The portfolio of work can include press journalism (news stories, features, interviews), a website (created by the student as part of the Online Media course), video and sound packages for Broadcast Journalism (for Journalism minors) or an advertising campaign (Media Studies minors).
