Master in Food Technology
The aim of MSc programme in Food Technology is to provide a general understanding of food properties and production, and knowledge in technologies involved in the production of safe and healthy food that qualifies the recipient not only to analyse and control, but also to design, innovate and develop food production systems and food products.
Those completing the MSc in Food Technology can integrate research and development (R&D) institutions/departments, food company’s technical staff or work at intermediate/senior management level in the food industry. The acquired skills will enable them to carry out activities associated with e.g. the processing and analysis of food and (alcoholic) beverages, research and development of new food products and processes, food safety and quality, assessment and mitigation of environmental impact of the food industry, traceability and authenticity of food products.
The course is also taught in Portuguese.
Admission requirements
Conditions of access
- Holders of a degree in the areas of Food Engineering, Food Science, Biology, Chemistry, Agronomy, Biotechnology, Biomedical Sciences or equivalent degree, obtained in agreement with the principles of the Bologna Process
- Holders of a foreign academic degree: attributed in a first cycle of studies organized according to the principles of the Bologna Process by a signatory state to this process; recognized as fulfilling the objectives of a degree by the Scientific Councils, Technical-Scientific Councils, or Scientific Committee of the associated organizational units
- Where duly justified, holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum vitae that is recognized as attesting the capacity to carry out this cycle of studies by the Scientific Councils, Technical-Scientific Councils, or Scientific Committee of the associated organizational units.

As we are a public university, no studentships are available for Bachelor, Master or PhD degrees, independently of the students nationality. Nevertheless, for the second academic year (thesis research) there is a possibility to apply for a studentship within research projects running in our science and technology centers. You can apply for a studentship while completing your first academic year of the Master but we cannot guarantee that there will be funding for all students for the second research year.
Tuition fees
National Students: 1100 Euros
International Students*: 2000 Euros
Application Fee: 50 Euros
Registration Fee and School Insurance: 175 Euros
Note: The tuition of this course can be paid in 10 installments, being the first at the time of registration and the remaining in the months of October, November, December, January, February, March, April, May and June.
* in accordance with Decree-Law No. 36/2014, changed by Decree-Law No.62/2018, of 6th August, international students are nationals of a country which is not a Member State of the European Union and are not a legally resident in Portugal for more than 2 uninterrupted years by 1st of January of the enrollment year.
