Course overview
International hospitality is challenging, dynamic and expanding rapidly. It also offers a wide range of exciting employment opportunities.
On this course, you will choose the pathway that best suits you – one that is tailored to suit your previous qualifications and experience.
Pathway A:
If you are new to the industry and your qualifications are not related to hospitality or tourism, then you will take this pathway. This course will teach you about managing the operational aspects of the industry and incorporated the study of related tourism and events environments.
Pathway B:
If you have an undergraduate degree in hospitality or tourism management and you wish to continue your studies then this will be your pathway. In addition to operational management, you will focus on the long-term strategic development of hospitality operations and will equip you to engage in continuing development using a broad range of intellectual and study skills.
You will also take part in a five-day study trip to a European city destination in order to carry out research related to one or more of your course assessments. Previous study visits have taken students to Paris, Madrid, Lisbon, Seville, Palma, Amsterdam and Rome. The cost of this residential visit is included in the course fees.

Work placement
If you want to get your foot in the door of a hospitality organisation, then this optional three to six-month placement will give you valuable experience, enhance your CV and may help your future employment prospects.
If you choose to do this placement, you will be supported by our highly experiencedhired@UCBstaff members who organise presentations and meetings with employers to help you identify the kind of placement you want. Whether your ideal work environment is overseas or somewhere in the UK, there is an extensive choice available.
At UCB, we understand the importance of work placements within academic study, and our employer contacts say they give preference to students with qualifications who also have experience within the field.

Duration for this course is 3 Years full-time / 2 years full-time with optional placement / 2.5 years part-time
Admission requirements
Students holding a degree from a recognised institution can apply for postgraduate courses at University College Birmingham. The University also values the practical experience of applicants and will consider applications from students who can provide evidence of appropriate work experience.
English language requirement for international applicants
To apply for any undergraduate degree, if your first language is not English, you will need to sit an approved test in English.
In addition to IELTS, for international applicants, University College Birmingham accepts a number of country-specific English language qualifications as evidence of English language ability. These are shown under the ‘Country Specific Information’ tab of the University website.
We also offer UCB English Proficiency Test that is complimentary to all our conditional offer holders. You will need to achieve an overall score of B2 with no less than B2- in in each component.

Placement (Optional)
- Postgraduate Work Placement
The Postgraduate Work Placement module provides students with the opportunities to further develop practical skills, relate theory to practice and to gain a sound base of experience. In addition, the module seeks to develop 'life skills' to assist students in progressing towards a career in management. The placement period offers the student the opportunity to experience work in the hospitality industry and to gain academic credit for their learning. It is important therefore that students are given the opportunity to work in an organisation which is both appropriate to their needs and has a professional approach towards training and development. Students' needs and any previous experience are taken into consideration, when introducing them to a suitable employer. The staff in the hired@UCB suite will draw on their extensive experience to ensure that the objectives are met as fully as possible.
