Program description

MSc Agricultural and Food Economics

The degree is taught by SMEA, the Graduate School in Agricultural and Food Economics. It has a long experience in research concerning agricultural economics and policy, the industrial organisation of the food sector and the analysis of the functioning of the food supply chain. This experience relates both to academic research and to support for policy-makers, since the researchers of the team have developed a long experience of collaboration with international organisations (i.e., European Commission, OECD, FAO and World Bank), government agencies and producer associations.

The programme will prepare students to analyze the agri-food system and to operate in the various functional areas of businesses and organizations. The programme will develop professional knowledge and skills with regards to:

  • analyzing traditional problems relating to agricultural markets and food, evaluating the implications of agri-food and commercial policies;
  • managing the liberalization processes and rules of free competition also within an international context;
  • analyzing the behavior of final consumers with respect to agricultural and food products;
  • understanding the different sectors of the agri-food system, the vertical relations and the coordination of the various phases of the system (e.g. agriculture, food processing and food retailing);
  • managing emerging issues in agricultural and food production, including the safety of foodstuffs and the environmental impact of agricultural activities, the role of quality, information and traceability, the management of technical innovations, in particular biotechnology, and of the industrialization of agriculture;
  • dealing with corporate and logistical problems that affect business functions according to the peculiarities of agribusiness companies.

Admission requirements

Programme-specific entry requirements

Candidates best suited for the programme have a similar academic background in agriculture and economics and have studied basics of Mathematics and Economics at undergraduate level. The academic board will evaluate candidates’ academic and personal background and decide if they meet the specific conditions for admission.

Candidates who meet both general and programme-specific entry requirements will have to take an online interview with the Professors of the School of Agricultural, Food and Environmental Sciences, aimed at checking their motivation to study the programme and their awareness of the subject.

English language proficiency requirements

Candidates need to satisfy the English language proficiency requirement in order to submit their application.

General entry requirements

The entry requirements are based on the latest guidelines for admission published by the Italian Ministry for Education.

  1. Eligible candidates need to hold a valid high school diploma.

  2. Eligible candidates need to hold an undergraduate degree obtained after a minimum of 3 years of study (180 ECTS), which satisfies the requirements for access to second-level academic studies in the awarding country. If candidates have undertaken less than 15 years of total schooling, they may not be eligible for admission to a Laurea Magistrale.

  3. The degree has to be issued by a higher education institution which is regularly accredited or recognized in the awarding country.

  4. The undergraduate degree must be obtained before 31 July 2021.
