Master's Degree in Cultural Heritage Management and Museology

Program description

Master's Degree in Cultural Heritage Management and Museology

In recent years, public cultural policies and the social reassessment of heritage have led to the creation or expansion of numerous heritage institutions and cultural facilities that need professionals skilled in the conservation, dissemination and management of cultural heritage. This master's degree offers professional training for work in museums, heritage institutions, public bodies, and businesses in the culture industry, and also prepares for professional practice in emerging areas and profiles of heritage management.

This master's degree focuses fundamentally on professional practice: the main objective is to provide students with theoretical and practical training through which they will acquire the tools to pursue a career in the field of heritage.

The program is largely interdisciplinary in its organization and content; lecturers from fourteen departments across seven different faculties contribute to the tuition, and students will also benefit from the expertise of visiting teaching staff on Spanish and international mobility programs and guest lecturers.

The program is also available in Catalan.

Admission requirements

In accordance with Article 16 of Royal Decree 1393/29 October 2007, students must hold one of the following qualifications to access university master's degree courses:

  • An official Spanish degree.
  • A degree issued by a higher education institution within the European Higher Education Area framework that authorizes the holder to access university master's degree courses in the country of issue.
  • A qualification from outside the framework of the European Higher Education Area. In this case, the qualification should be recognized as equivalent to an official Spanish degree. If it is not recognized, the University of Barcelona shall verify that it corresponds to a level of education that is equivalent to official Spanish degrees and that it authorizes the holder to access university master's degree courses in the country of issue. Admission shall not, in any case, imply that prior qualifications have been recognized as equivalent to a Spanish master's degree and does not confer recognition for any purposes other than that of admission to the master's degree course.

Program content

This master's degree, which has a total study load of 90 credits, has been taught since the academic year 2006-2007, although the original syllabus was first approved as a UB-specific degree in the academic year 1995-1996. The degree shares a portion of its subjects with the master's degree in Cultural Management.

The master's degree program lasts two academic years. During the first year (equivalent to 60 credits) students attend theoretical and practical sessions, and they enjoy a series of field trips to heritage institutions and a study trip to a European city. The second year (equivalent to 30 credits) consists of presenting the master's degree Final Project (which can be professional- or research-oriented) and a placement in a patrimonial institution (which can be in Catalonia, the rest of Spain or abroad). It is worth noting that the master's degree has the recognition of excellence granted by the AQU (Quality Agency of the Catalan Government).
