Program description

Get an Education in the Latest Financial Technology

This Master of Science in Financial Technology and Computing program will provide students who have a strong background in informatics with the necessary tools and skills to understand core challenges in finance and the advanced technology necessary to drive the next generation of financial services.

Informatics has brought about a silent revolution in banking and finance. For one, modern banking is almost entirely run by software. However the financial industry is also being shaken up by newly developed cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and new form factors such as mobile phones. Some other new developments in the financial market include things from algorithmic trading to robo investing, and from crowdlending to mobile payments. A degree in Financial Technology and Computing will put graduates in a position to be part of these exciting developments.

This program has a two-tiered structure that starts students off with a set of well-balanced core courses from both informatics and finance in the first year. In the second year they will choose from a broad set of electives that suit their personal interests and abilities. By studying in Switzerland, participants take advantage of the countries place at the forefront of the new Fintech industry. Since English is the unique teaching language, graduates will be well-prepared to work in international companies located in Switzerland and beyond.

Admission requirements

The formal requirement for admission is a Bachelor's degree granted by a recognised university in Computer Sciences or related disciplines.

Candidates with a Bachelor's degree of a recognised University of Applied Sciences may be admitted with 30-60 additional ECTS to be earned during or before the beginning of the programme, with Bachelor courses according to a study program defined by the scientific director.

Admissions will be treated on a case by case basis. Students with other degrees may be admitted on a case by case basis as well.

Tuition fees

The semester fees are CHF 4,000. For candidates resident in Switzerland, Lichtenstein and Campione d'Italia at the time of the final high school exam (maturità), the semester fee is CHF 2,000.

Scholarships & funding

For the academic year 2018/2019, the Foundation for the Lugano Faculties of the Università della Svizzera italiana will award a total of 60 one-off study grants of the amount of CHF 4'000 each. The merit-based grants are given to the students admitted to the first year of a USI Master programme starting in September 2018.

Università della Svizzera italiana organises a contest for 10 study grants for students admitted to the first year of one of the Master programs offered by the Faculty of Informatics for the academic year 2018/2019.

Career opportunities

Many existing financial companies struggle with keeping up with recent developments in finance technology and thus are in great need of informatics professionals who have a thorough understanding of finance.

Potential job profiles range from system architect to system developer to service designer to financial consultant.

With a FinTeC master, students will be able to help banks, trading companies, and insurers master this new reality, or, alternatively, be well positioned to challenge existing players with their own startup.
