Master's Degree in Mathematics and Applications

This Master's degree will provide the student with an advanced mathematical education, in accordance with the current needs of both the academic and the professional profile. It has a common part and two specializations:

  • Introduction to research: addressed to those students who want to pursue a PhD in Pure Mathematics.
  • Applications of Mathematics: addressed to those students who want to learn the use of Mathematics in industry, technology, finance or other areas of applications of mathematics.

Specific aims of this Master's degree are:

  • To deepen the knowledge, methods and purposes of several branches of mathematics.
  • To develop the analytic and abstraction skills, as well as the logic and rigorous thinking in advanced aspects of mathematics and their applications in scientific interdisciplinary contexts with some degree of mathematical complexity.
  • To enable the students to use the acquired knowledge, with considerable autonomy, in the definition of new problems and in the search of their solutions, both in academic and professional contexts.
  • To prepare for further specialized studies, both in mathematical research and in advanced professional developments.

Admission requirements

This Master's degree is aimed at students who hold an undergraduate degree in Mathematics. Students with a higher education degree from any country in related areas such as Physics or Engineering are also eligible to apply although they may have to complete an additional preparatory year (level M1, taught in Spanish). The following documents must be included:

  • Since English is one of the instruction languages of the degree, a knowledge of English at level B2 is required. For applicants from a non-English speaking country, a language certificate from a recognized institution must be presented.
  • An Academic transcript with the marks of the degree studies. It can be presented in Spanish, English, French, Italian or Portuguese; otherwise, a translation is needed.
  • Those students applying for the Master's without having finished the undergraduate degree must include in the application an expected date of finishing, which have to be before the beginning of the Master's classes.
  • An official declaration of the grade equivalence on the Spanish scale (available freely from the Spanish Ministry of Education).
  • A Curriculum Vitae.
  • A copy of the passport.
