Master's Degree in Legal Research

The Master’s degree in Legal Research (Spanish initials: MIJ-UAM, 60 ECTS) is an Official Master’s degree which is part of the Law Faculty’s Official Postgraduate Programme. It is delivered by the Public law and Philosophy of Law and the Private Law, Social and Economic Law Departments. The Master’s degree is suitable for Spanish or foreign Law graduates who are interested in research.

The MIJ-UAM is specially designed to train future PhD programme candidates. This is done by complementing pure research training, provided in legal methodology subjects, with specialised optional subjects offered in other official postgraduate Master’s degrees in the Law Faculty.

The Master’s Degree can be studied on a full time basis over one academic year or part time over two academic years. Visiting lecturers from other Spanish and foreign universities contribute to the teaching

Admission requirements

Degree transcript (Grado / Licenciatura) (weighting: up to 50%)

  • Proven knowledge of languages (for English: C1 level and above, and for other languages starting from B2): (up to 10%)
  • Other university qualifications in addition to a Law Degree (Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s Degree or unofficial “own degrees” -“títulaciónes universitarias propias”): (up to 20%)
  • Prior research experience (publications, collaboration grants, congresses, etc.): (up to 20%)

Each applicant will be required to attend a personal interview with the Director of the Master in order to evaluate his / her application. It is necessary to hold a Law Degree (“licenciado” or “graduado”) or the equivalent for certificates issued by foreign centres (recognition - “homologación”- is not necessary).

  • B2 minimum level of English according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
  • Students whose mother tongue is not Spanish are required to have a minimum B2 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
