The master's in IP is available in residential, limited residential, and online formats (online and limited residential focus on patent law.)

Admission requirements

Applicants whose native language is not English must provide a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score, taken within three years from the time of application submission. If you have earned an undergraduate university degree where the language of instruction was English, no TOEFL or IELTS examination is required. However, you must have signed documentation from an administrator at the university confirming English language as the medium of instruction. The University Of New Hampshire Franklin Pierce School Of Law’s Institution Code is 3396 for TOEFL. No code is required for IELTS. No other test of English language proficiency will be accepted.

Accepted TOEFL scores:

  • Paper: 550
  • IBT: 80

Accepted IELTS score: 6.5

The Admission Committee may waive the proof of language ability requirement under compelling circumstances.

Program delivery

Ranked a top-10 law school to study IP since the rankings began nearly 30 years ago, UNH Franklin Pierce is the leader in intellectual property legal education. Half the faculty are dedicated to IP, and students study at one of the largest academic IP libraries in the Western Hemisphere. Alumni work in more than 80 countries around the world at places like Arent Fox, Bayer, General Electric, Hewlett-Packard, Microsoft, Nintendo, PepsiCo., the USPTO, Venable LLP, and WIPO. Residential students begin in August and complete their degree in one year. Online students begin in August or January and can complete the degree part-time in up to five years.

  • Out-of-State Resident:$40,000 per semester
  • New England Regional:$37,500 per semester

Qualification

Student Learning Outcomes for Intellectual Property (IP), L.L.M. UNH Law graduates from the IP LLM program will demonstrate competency at the level of an experienced attorney in these four areas:

  • Knowledge and understanding of substantive and procedural law in traditional areas of intellectual property law and practice in the United States and internationally, focused on patents, copyrights, and trademarks.
  • Legal analysis and reasoning, legal research, problem-solving, and written and oral communication in the context of traditional intellectual property law and practice in the United States and globally.
  • Exercise of proper professional and ethical responsibilities to clients and the national and global legal systems of intellectual property rights; and
  • Other professional skills needed for competent and ethical participation as a member of the legal profession focused on intellectual property practice domestically and internationally.

Student Learning Outcomes for Intellectual Property (IP), M.A. UNH Law graduates from the IP interdisciplinary Master's or certificate program will demonstrate familiarity with these four areas:

  • Knowledge and understanding of substantive and procedural law in traditional areas of intellectual property law and practice in the United States and internationally, focused on patents, copyrights, and trademarks.
  • Legal analysis and reasoning, legal research, problem-solving, and written and oral communication in the context of traditional intellectual property law and practice in the United States and globally.
  • Exercise of proper professional and ethical responsibilities as a lawyer or other type of professional to clients or other relevant stakeholders and the national and global legal systems of intellectual property rights; and
  • Other professional skills needed for competent and ethical participation as a member of the legal or other professions focused on the practice or other use of intellectual property law domestically or internationally.
