Introduction
Bachelor's Degree in Biomedical Engineering
Biomedical Engineering is the branch of engineering focusing on the field of medicine where traditionaltechniques of electronic, mechanic, aeronautic, chemical, telecommunications, material engineering and informatics are applied to the analysis and solutions of problems related to medicine and biology of the 21st century. Due to its interdisciplinary nature, biomedical engineering requires expertise in the basic sciences of engineering (mathematics, physics and applied chemistry) as well as of the biomedical fields (molecular and cellular biology, biochemistry, anatomy, physiology and regenerative medicine).
This degree from UC3M has been created to give participants the ability to further develop the fused scientific area of biomedicine and engineering. Professionals with degrees in biomedical engineering are some of those in the highest demand over the past few years(The Wall Street Journal, 2010).
During the program, students will be provided with a basic foundation which allows them to work in different areas including the development and design of new instrumentation technologies and medical imaging, biomaterials, tissue engineering, biomechanics, rehabilitation engineering, telemedicine, gene and cellular therapy, implantable devices as well as numerical simulation and the mathematical analysis of biologic and medical systems. The degree in biomedical engineering provides a general training in three disciplines and allows the student to specialize (during the last year) in one of these three professional paths:
- Medical instrumentation
- Medical Imaging
- Tissue engineering and regenerative medicine
