Program description

Education, Gender, and Transfeminist Activism in Mexico City

The course will focus on several streams of critical education: critical pedagogy, popular education, feminist and queer pedagogy, anti-racist education, and direct action and activism through the lens of Transfeminist Cultural Production and Activism in Mexico City. This course offers students the opportunity to critically engage with issues, topics, and enactments of race, nationalism, gender, and sexuality as they intersect with education, social movements, and politics. One of the aims of this course is to advance understanding of transgender and non-binary issues outside the hegemony of the U.S., and in particular, to enter critical education insights into the transnational conversation about the status of trans and non-binary communities.

A sprawling urban hub and home to nearly 9 million people, Mexico City has grown up, around, and over thriving indigenous cities, including Mexico-Tenochtitlán and Tlatelolco, creating a rich and dense palimpsest of cultural practices and traditions that are discursively and politically used to advance particular visions and ideologies related to the role of education, nationalism, gender, and sexuality.

In this course, students will:

  • Attend live-streamed courses, workshops, ceremonies, protests, and government meetings.
  • Go on live/virtual excursions to locations around Mexico and have the opportunity to ask questions and directly engage with community members working on issues related to sex work, trans rights, and gender violence.
  • Join panels and training by trans activists and trans-specific community-based organizations located throughout Mexico such as Tijuana, Guadalajara, and Chiapas to hear perspectives from local artists, academics, activists, and cultural practitioners.
