BS Social Studies Education
Preparing future social studies educators involves courses that cover a wide perspective in historical foundations, psychology, economics and government. The Bachelor of science with a major in social studies education program at Trine University addresses topics such as:
- social justice
- ideal and practice of citizenship in a democratic society
- global connections and interdependence
Extensive field work in the methods of teaching social studies is included to help you gain an understanding of the value and use of instructional resources in a dynamic, student-centered learning environment characterized by positive, productive and healthy interactions.
The Bachelor of science with a major in social studies education program features a rigorous curriculum that emphasizes the value of real-world experience. Our expert faculty educate future teachers in:
- classroom management strategies
- instructional methods and curriculum updates
- implementation and effective use of classroom technology
These lessons are put into practice in the real classrooms where you will spend more than 800 hours prior to graduation. Classroom experiences begin in the first year and culminate in a 16-week student teaching opportunity where you will work closely with a faculty advisor at Trine and a cooperating teacher at your placement school.
Admission requirements
- Admission into the Allen School of Engineering and Computing and the Rinker Ross School of Health Sciences requires a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher. In addition, students must have successfully completed the equivalent of Trine's English Composition I, Calculus I, and Chemistry I with a "C" or higher.
- Admission into the Franks School of Education requires a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
- Admission into the Jannen School of Arts and Sciences and the Ketner School of Business require a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.25.
