Diploma of Nursing

Diploma of Nursing is a nationally recognised entry-level qualification for Enrolled Nurses (ENs) in Australia. You will graduate with the essential skills and knowledge to work as an Enrolled Nurse across a range of healthcare settings. The Diploma of Nursing at THINK Education is accredited by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) and is listed as an approved program with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulating Authority (AHPRA).

Graduates of the Diploma of Nursing will be eligible to apply to the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) for registration as an Enrolled Nurse.

Admission requirements

Students who want to become an Enrolled Nurse (EN) and advocate for improving patients’ lives.

Domestic Students

  • Year 12 or equivalent; OR
  • An Australian Certificate III in Individual Support or disability work
  • For students wanting to apply as a mature age entry, be 21 years of age or older
  • Undertake Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) testing from an Australian Government approved provider and demonstrate competency at exit level 3 in the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) in both reading and numeracy

International Students

  • IELTS score of 7.0 minimum (Academic) or above, with no skills band less than 7.0
    • Check IELTS test dates
    • Find your nearest IELTS test centre
  • Undertake Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) testing from an Australian Government approved provider and demonstrate competency at exit level 3 in the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) in both reading and numeracy

Program content

Year 1, T1

  • Apply communication skills in nursing practice
  • Work with diverse people
  • Confirm physical health status
  • Perform clinical assessment and contribute to planning nursing care
  • Provide first aid
  • Comply with infection prevention and control policies and procedures
  • Follow safe work practices for direct client care
  • Manage personal stressors in the work environment

Year 1, T2

  • Practice nursing within the Australian healthcare system
  • Apply legal & ethical parameters to nursing practice
  • Implement and monitor care of the older person
  • Implement, monitor and evaluate nursing care plans
  • Apply a palliative approach in nursing practice

Year 1, T3

  • Analyse and respond to client health information
  • Research and apply evidence to practice
  • Principles of wound management
  • Implement and monitor care for a person with chronic health problems
  • Apply nursing prcatice in the primary health care setting
  • Promote Aboriginal and/ or Torres Strait Islander cultural safety

Year 2, T1

  • Administer and monitor medicines and intravenous therapy
  • Care for the person with mental health conditions.
  • Reflect on and improve own professional practice

Year 2, T2

  • Contributing to nursing care of a person with complex needs
  • Implement and monitor care for a person with acute health problems
  • Care for the person with mental health conditions

Program delivery

20 months full-time including 400 hours of unpaid clinical placement.

Students on an international student visa are required to study full time, i.e. the completion of a minimum of 1.0 EFTSL of study per year.
