Program description

The Bachelor of Music provides advanced, pre-professional music training in three specialisations: Music Performance, Composition, and Musicology/Ethnomusicology. All students enrolled in the degree begin by studying the same subjects in first year, before deciding on a specialisation to pursue in second and third year studies.

All students receive practical tuition through weekly individual instrumental, vocal or composition lessons, instrument classes, extensive solo and ensemble performance opportunities, and regular master classes with distinguished national and international artists and teachers. They will learn from some of the most committed, talented and experienced teachers in Australia and play an active part in the musical life of the University and the city of Melbourne.

Bachelor of Music students are encouraged to apply for a fourth-year Honours degree. An honours year provides an intensive mode of study allowing you to master your specialisation and create a pathway into advanced graduate study options in music.

  • Develop a variety of skills, knowledge and understandings across a range of practical, theoretical and conceptual aspects of music
  • Broaden musical knowledge across a range of styles and repertoire
  • Develop advanced critical thinking and creative problem-solving through regular performance-based activities and theoretical studies
  • Make critically informed and sophisticated responses to new musical ideas, methodologies and theoretical frameworks
MUSICOLOGY AND ETHNOMUSICOLOGY

Ethnomusicology is the study of people, the social processes and the wider context involved in music-making, and in the music product itself. Ethnomusicology students explore the meaning of music to particular groups of people – what part it plays in their lives, and why it is meaningful to them.

BACHELOR OF MUSIC (HONOURS)

Bachelor of Music students are encouraged to apply for a fourth-year Honours degree. An honours year provides an intensive mode of study allowing you to master your specialisation and create a pathway into advanced graduate study options in music.
